Product Description

With the dawning of the French Revolution came the reinvention of the guitar. Transformed in form, and equipped with a new set of techniques that saw its archaic tablature system replaced with mensural notation, the instrument became an instant success with the listening public of Europe particularly the middle classes, who used their new power to ensure its starring role in popular music of the period.

Among the composers now attracted to writing for the guitars expanded range of expression was Filippo Gragnani; born in Livorno in 1768, he first trained as a violinist before turning to composition. The three sonatas included on this compilation make up Op.8, and are brimming with melodic inventiveness: composed for violin and guitar, they perfectly encapsulate Gragnanis style maintaining a delicate balance between the rigour of classical Viennese elegance, Italian cantabile and the energy of galant music. Although the violin is assigned the bulk of the interest, the guitar has a number of solos that allow its player to indulge in virtuosic display.

Together with the rhythmic energy of the fast movements and the inspired lyricism of the central ones, this charming collection of works offers a fascinating glimpse into the wealth of repertoire composed for the guitar, one of the most popular instruments of the Napoleonic period. Featuring performances full of gusto and aplomb, the recording comprises a worthy addition to any serious guitarists library.

A Neglected Composer Rediscovered 15 May 2012

Gragnani - Sonatas Op. 8 for violin and guitar - Newton Classics

Another interesting re-issue by the Dutch label Newton Classics, "Gragnani - Sonatas Op. 8 for violin and guitar" presents rarely heard chamber music by Italian composer Filippo Gragnani, some of whose works still exist, astonishingly enough, only in manuscript form. Written on the cusp of the classical and romantic eras, these duos (performed by violinist Franco Mezzena and guitarist Massimo Scattolin) give evidence of Gragnani's careful study and thorough understanding of both instruments.
The recorded quality here, like the playing, is first rate. In fact, both Mr. Mezzena and Mr. Scattolin play so beautifully that one might wish to know more about them than just their names. Unfortunately, the folks at Newton have (again) neglected to include either photos or biographical data or any information about the styles or makers of the instruments used. Considering the company's pride in the otherwise excellent updating of the liner notes, this is a lapse that is very hard to understand.
"Gragnani - Sonatas Op. 8 for violin and guitar" goes some way toward renewing interest in the music of an undeservedly neglected composer/guitarist of the early romantic era.
Highly recommended to guitar students, fans of early 19th century music, and especially, to the general listener, for whom Gragnani's music will be a very pleasant surprise.
