Biography

Biography by Andy Kellman
In November 2005, Chris Brown’s Scott Storch-produced “Run It!” — a rewrite of Usher’s “Yeah!” — topped the Billboard Hot 100, making the 16-year-old singer the first male artist in over a decade to top the chart with a debut single. While there was nowhere to go but down, at least in terms of chart positions, the ... Read more in Amazon's Chris Brown Store

BBC Review

Two weeks after the release of Rihanna’s Rated R – a complex, adventurous pop record that presented a superstar fighting with fire after a difficult year – Chris Brown's comeback album arrives. This is a comeback in both senses, as a response to the woman he attacked back in February, from a man who has spent the time since trying to save his career.

Nevertheless, it's important to remember that Brown began this LP in 2008. "I don't want to be typical urban," he said last summer, talking excitedly about his glossy ambitions. "I want to be like... Prince and Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder." Graffiti is full of sparky collaborators who could help make this happen, from Lupe Fiasco and Lil Wayne in big-budget supporting roles, to reggae group Rock City and Dutch electro-pop singer Eva Simons, with whom the 20-year-old RnB star tries out new sounds.  But anyone expecting dazzling results will find mainly damp squibs – songs sputtering with faded 80s glitz instead of forward-looking glamour.

In Brown's brave new world, only two sorts of track exist: slinky RnB body-poppers and cheesy, breathy ballads. Most of them come swaddled in AutoTune – how very groundbreaking – and the songs that sound best (like the vaguely catchy I Can Transform Ya and Pass Out) sound like pale imitations of Justin Timberlake album tracks. Elsewhere, the prevailing mood is one of boyband pop by numbers. Crawl is a weak first attempt at an X Factor epic, while So Cold sounds like The Backstreet Boys limping quietly back to the drawing board. And then there's Take My Time, a song about sex that's so powerfully unerotic that secondary schools should use it to encourage celibacy.

It also quickly gets impossible to ignore Brown's pointed lyrics, especially in Famous Girl: "I don't wear no halo / You were first to play the game, though / Sorry I bust the windows out your car". And even if we ignore his protestations, Graffiti still lumbers, having few of the modern flourishes Brown kindly promised us (only the brief sigh of an accordion on I Luv U gives us sweet relief). Instead, plodding melodies draw attention to Brown's unpleasantly macho style and unapologetic sentiments, and the void where his talent, and his future, should be. --Jude Rogers

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good 9 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
Enjoyed listening to this with the majority of tracks quite reasonable and some stand-outs imo like Famous Girl, What I Do, Crawl, Sing Like Me, So Cold, IYA. Try and judge it on the music only. A must-buy for Chris Brown/R&B fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars good but shame 22 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
Overall a really good album, such a great artist and brilliant talent, shame he had to make a mistake that seems to have ruined him. This should have much more air time then i've even noticed! Shame..

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another great album from Chris Brown 30 Jun 2011
By LG
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Only recently did I buy my first Chris Brown cd being F.A.M.E.) (which I would also strongly recommend someone to buy!) from that I then went backwards and bought his Exclusive - The Forever Edition album (another recommendation!) and then this one. I'd have to say both are fantastic CD's and despite buying them a few years after their release, neither sound dated and are still catchy years on! Most CD's have a few tracks that you tend to listen to and then you skip most of the others, not with his albums! I'm always listening to at least one of his now!

Would definitly recommend this product and all of his other CD's! Absolutely brilliant! :-D

5.0 out of 5 stars why? 21 Jun 2011
By Majida
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
just fail to understand why this album hasnt sold as well as his previous ones. Maybe because of the whole Rihanna thing. its way better, taking a different approach, more autotune, good beats and floorfillers! so its suitable for teens. but its defo a great album and CB never disappoints!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album 23 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
This album had no chance following the Rhianna incident - Chris became public enemy no1, radio stations don't play his songs anymore, what chance did the album have commercially?
It is best to listen to this album without prejudice as it is one of best RnB albums released in the past few years.
His vocals and songwriting skills have improved so much and he co-writes most of the album. The album begins with the insansely catchy 'I can transform ya' and impressively the album doesn't stick to the one sound. It has the emotional songs such as 'crawl', 'so cold', 'lucky me' and 'I'll go' - all of which are amazing. It has playful, upbeat songs - 'girlfriend', 'what I do' and the oriental sounding 'sing like me'. The album succesfully has electro songs - 'I.Y.A', 'Chase our Love' and 'Pass out'.
The album is very impressive and it's a shame it doesn't get the credit and success it deserves because of Brown's presonal life.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite album 20 April 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is my favorite album, with a lot of good songs in it, I would not pay mor than £10 for it. comes with a leaflet which is pretty pointless but the songs make up for it. Best songs are: Girlfriend, Pass out, Crawl, I can transform ya, Fallin down, so cold and what i do.

I mean if you like chris Brown get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD 4 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
I heard this CD from start to finish and .......it is absolute class. For someone as young as this and having gone through all he has in the last year........wonderful. Classy music, has a bit of everything. The funky beat, the relaxing beat all still while still being contemporary. Get a copy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album!! 3 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
Clearly Chris is born to do what he's doing! For me this is an artist at his peak regardless of what has been in the press he's back and on fire. Im in Love with this album, the expression is articulate & creative the producing is perfect(I also think the dance tracks are great). I have never bought an album by him before, i enjoyed the music but for me his music was more for the teens. However there is definately maturity in this album and definately some insight into what 'REALLY' happened with Rihanna. Although that may depend on where your knowledge of the cecular world lies, all is not always as it seems!! I don't beleive everything i see, thats usually where deception lies. Try listening.
Well Done Chris, Praying 4 u x
