The Almost Perfectest Pencil Set Ever 6 Jun 2014
By Steve Skidmark™ - Published on Amazon.com
This epitome of German engineering is a "delight on any sophisticated desk," and "an ideal gift for sophisticated people," according to Faber-Castell. You sophisticates who lack a sophisticated desk, and those of you that actually have a pretty nice desk but who aren't terribly sophisticated yourselves, take note. Your papers are not in order. This set is a limited-edition masterpiece and NOT for knuckle-dragging reprobates who think that possession of an opposing digit endows them with the innate ability to pick up a pencil and write stuff.

The description for this item focuses exclusively on the pencil case, which is painstakingly crafted from German Alder. I think they mean the tree, and not a local city council member, but sometimes the pursuit of excellence leads to interesting new approaches. The case enforces a necessary natural order on the included pencils. You don't want them wandering about your desk drawer, rubbing shoulders with some unwholesome breath mint or being corrupted by those degenerate plastic paper clips that come during the night to steal jobs from the shiny metal ones.

Interestingly, the product description makes no mention whatsoever of the pencils themselves. Needless to say I immediately ordered a set. The pencils are exactly as described. I soon found myself sharpening and lodging them in ceiling tiles with great efficiency. Replacement pencils are a mere $45. If that seems out of line, it's due to your lack of sophistication.

Despite the obvious aerodynamic appeal of the pencils, a nagging doubt tugged relentlessly at the sleeve of my conscience. You see, the set is purported to be the pinnacle of German craftsmanship: "Each case is numbered and comes with a certificate, signed by the master craftsman to document the quality of his work." Yet the lid on case #57 was misaligned by no fewer than 3 microns. The situation required decisive action. And so it pleases me to announce the early retirement of Reinhard Kugelschreiber, that craftsman whose signature adorned the certificate accompanying my pencil case, from his 30-year tenure with the Faber-Castell organization. There's no room for impurities in the orderly world of precision writing instrument production.
