In spite of an improbable plot this is an entertaining production and well up to Seefestspiele Morbisch standards. The lakeside staging adapts well to the necessary scene changes and is particularly appropriate for the depiction of Karnival throughout much of the First Act. All sorts of activities are taking place and repeat viewing would be necessary to register many of them, not that they are important, but they are a tribte to the stage direction. Most of the leading actors in the cast are new to Morbisch DVD's, although Harald Serafin has a larger role than latterly. The vocal principals come across well, the dancing sequences are passable and the relatively modern costumes are apt. This rates better than a recent Viennese effort.
