I've owned a pair of Grado SR 80 headphones for about 5 years. The performance is quite superb considering the cost, and although used almost daily they have never let me down in any respect. The only parts I have had to replace (once) are the ear pads.

In the past I've owned Sennheiser HD414Xs, Audio Technica's (�60), Ultrasone iCans, Koss Sportapro. I am very critical of sound. I compared these to the Sennheiser HD595s using a pair of ipods playing the same songs. I consider the Grados to be more accurate, clinical, revealing, brighter, sharper detailed than the HD595s. My wife said the Sennheisers sounded more like vinyl she disliked the Grados?
The choice was tough because at this level the HD595s were producing a very very good sound that would please many. But to my ears I preferred the Grados because they gave me more musical information than the HD595s. I am also impressed by the solid construction and heavy duty cable - these headphones are built to last (unlike the Ultrasone iCans). Don't let the retro look put you off these are very serious headphones and will transform the sound of your iPod!

First of all - if you are after a serious upgrade for your iPod or other mp3 player, I would say that you are better served elsewhere - the Goldring GX200 for example (these are buds, not cans - but we are talking about a PORTABLE music player after all). iPods lack the power to drive large cans at decent volumes while retaining headroom. Saying that however, the Grados do work convincingly on the iPod at modeate volumes.

Connect them to any decent budget or mid-priced hi-fi and you will be in for a real treat. The SR-80s are identicle to the SR-60s, differing only in the construction of the cable leading to the 'phones, which increases the refinement of the bass somewhat. Once broken in, the bass is solid, the mids articulate and the highs are crisp but not overbearing.

The beauty of quality headphones such as these is that they have such low harmonic distortion that the sound never grows tiring. This coupled with the light weight of the Grados and the comfortable fit will find you engaging in very long listening sessions late into the night. So be warned!

Steer clear of similarly priced headphones such as the Sonys and Sennheisers - they simply can't compete.
