Product Description

'Downton Abbey' from the servants' point of view! Another fascinating chapter in the life of Swallowcliffe Hall, a grand old English country house. It's 1914, and World War One is about to change the lives of the aristocratic Vye family and their servants for ever. The war brings tragedy in its wake but also new opportunities for Grace, Polly's daughter and a reluctant kitchenmaid. As most of the young male servants leave Swallowcliffe to fight in France, trainloads of wounded soldiers begin to arrive at the Hall in their place to convalesce. Grace begins to realize the terrible effect the war is having and worries desperately about her beloved brother Tom, away at the Front. Nobody is safe, not even Lord and Lady Vye, making their way back from America aboard the ill-fated liner Lusitania. And then Grace finds herself falling in love - with the wrong person. Can she ever escape from the servants' hall, or is the old order as strong as ever?

'"Come on, Grace," he said. "When did you worry what other people think? Surely the only thing that matters is whether you're as fond of me as I am of you."
"How can you possibly say that?" I snapped, angry that he should be so short-sighted and selfish. "The world might be changing but no doubt there'll still be Vyes at Swallowcliffe and servants to look after them for a good few years to come. I shan't be welcome in the drawing room yet awhile."'

This is one of my favourite books. It's the second in the 'Swallowcliffe Hall' trilogy, about three generations of girls who live and work in a grand country house. This is the story of Grace, the daughter of Polly Perkins from the first book, who's working as a kitchen maid when the Great War arrives and turns everyone's life upside down. War brings a chance for Grace to get out of the kitchen and make something of her life, but she must also face tragedy as her brother goes off to fight, along with most of the male servants from the Hall. I loved reading about how life there changes for the women who are left behind, and for the Vye family, as Lord and Lady Vye return from America aboard the Lusitania and the Hall becomes home to wounded soldiers. It's an exciting read, packed with emotion and with a love story at its heart - perfect for adults who enjoy historical fiction as well as teens!

The Continuation of Swallowcliffe Hall... 8 April 2012
By Mercedes L. Johnmeyer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Grace's Story continues the tale of the servants of Swallowcliffe Hall. It picks up 24 years after 'Polly's Story', in 1914. WWI is raging and all the young men at the hall as well as the rest of England, are being shipped off to France to fight and die for their country.

Just as her mother Polly did over two decades earlier, Grace comes of age while working at the beautiful manor. She begins work in the kitchen but is miserable. She knows it's not what she's meant to be doing and longs to work in the stables with her father. It goes completely against convention, but since all the able-bodied young men have gone to war, Grace gets the chance to prove what she can do. She also finds herself falling for a young man far outside of her class. Everyone makes it clear that there is no way she can be with him, especially her mother, but Grace can't help the way she feels.

I really liked this installment of the Swallowcliffe story. Grace is a stubborn girl, but she has a good heart. Her mother Polly is extremely set in her ways, which could be frustrating, but Grace isn't afraid to take the reins when she needs to.

We also learn there's a darker side to the mighty Vye family. Lord and Lady Vye are aboard the ill-fated Lusitania on their way back from America when it's torpedoed by a German sub. The outcome is a shock to all of Swallowcliffe Hall, but especially to Grace, who learns of a terrible personality flaw in the revered Lord Vye.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. The only reason I'm giving it 4 and not 5 stars is because of the ending. 'Polly's Story' ended a little abruptly, but you weren't left with a million questions. 'Grace's Story' on the other hand was EXTREMELY abrupt. I was left with a whole mess of questions. I'm sure most of them will be answered in the final book, 'Isobel's Story' (which I've already started), but that book is set 24 years in the future, in 1938. Learning about something 24 years later doesn't have quite the same effect as when it's in the present. You lose the emotions of the moment...instead of experiencing things with the characters your just being told an abbreviated version. Aside from this small issue though, I really enjoyed this and highly recommend the series to anyone interested in this time period.

Grace's story was quite unexpected.... 4 April 2012

After finishing Polly's Story, I jumped right away to Grace's Story. The Swallowcliffe trilogy continued with Grace working in the same house where her mother started working decades before. It took an unexpected turn when Grace decided to take her fate in her own hands to do the kind of work that made her happy. Once again, the characters developed very well and the overall plot was made thicker with the first world war. Ms. Walters did a very good job of showing how the war affected everything that was Swallowcliffe Hall, including its servants. I felt the desperation and grief along with everyone in the book. Grace's Story came to a sudden halt with unanswered questions and possibilities. It promised a juicy tale to come in the last book of the trilogy.
