Wonderful and shamefully overlooked movie tracking the major changes in popular music from the 50's to the late 70's. Allison Anders' fab film is inspired. Brilliant performances from the whole cast (yes, even Patsy Kensit shines in this one) and a musical score that simply has to be heard. Anders encouraged songwriters from the period to collaborate with modern artists to produce totally authentic songs - you'll swear you've heard them somewhere before. Unsentimental and filled with genuine emotion. A gem.

This is an under rated classic. Lovingly recreating the 60's Brill Building where all the top US songwriters of the 60's would literally churn out the hits, the story is loosely based on the early career of Carole King. The main character wants to be a singer but gets drawn into writing hits for other acts instead. As her career goes increasingly down this path, we see her fall in love and totally immerse herself in the swinging 60's lifestyle. Its a fantastically enjoyable watch with some great new tunes specially scored by Burt Bacharach. Illeana Douglas plays the central role expertly and is supported by the likes of Matt Dillon, Eric Stoltz and, believe it or not, Patsy Kensit finally managing to be in a good movie! Highly recommended.

This is a fantastic film I saw on satellite TV tucked away at two in the morning around about 2003. Fantastic story line (cleverly mixing real events with fiction) well acted and beautifully directed with great emotional depth and also with great songs by Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello...so why can't I now, or for that matter EVER been able to buy it on region2 DVD? Someone who owns the rights to this film should do more with it-get it out there, more people need to see it-I need to see it!

This film takes you on a musical journey from the late 50's to the early 70's. It does the time travel well, with appropriate fashions, cars, styles, and musical genres. Some thinly disguised characters (Brian Wilson) are there for the spotting, and all the main characters are well-acted and convincing. What lets it down is the fact that the music and songs do not live up to the period(s) portrayed. It is hard to engage with the featured numbers, they do not stick in your head, and for me, not one tune was memorable. Nonetheless, a solid attempt to portray the turbulent times of the music business, and if you are over 50, you may well enjoy a trip down memory lane.
