I stumbled on this book when looking for some biblical advice on meeting the challenges of parenting. I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the tone of a lot of the books and websites I was looking at, the thrust of which seemed to be to enforce compliance through manipulation and control (locking children out of the house, for goodness sake, or the promise of "a new child by Friday") - all of which is utterly at odds with the gospel of grace which I love.

By contrast, Tim Kimmel's bottom line is that God has given us the best model for parenting in the way he deals with us - with patience, forgiveness, a true sense of what's actually important, and with unconditional love. We are all made differently and God doesn't have a "one size fits all" approach towards us. And so it is with our kids. What works for one won't necessarily be the answer for another. But if we grasp the basic truth of God's grace towards us, we have a good starting point!

The book is eminently readable, with a good balance of meaty substance and anecdotal illustrations. It doesn't offer any quick fixes, but I read it with an increasing sense of relief that it really is possible to build my family in a way that's consistent with what I understand of how God is building his. Whether you're a Christian or not, I urge you to make this your first port of call if you're looking for parenting advice!

From the back cover:
"In Grace Based Parenting, Dr. Kimmel offers a revolutionary concept that focuses on the model and guidance provided by God the Father - the ultimate child and family expert.

Grace Based Parenting is not another manual full of impossible standerds, rather it is a new map for learning to see ourselves and our children through God's limitless tenderness - to raise our kids the way that God raises us. This thoughtful, profound and compassionate book provides a truly liberating way to nurture a healthy family. As we embrace the way the grace He offers, we begin to give it - creating a sound foundation for growing morally strong and spiritually motivated children."

This book is fantastic. It shows, in many very practical ways, how to be grace filled as a parent. How to have rules, limits, and discipline with an attitude of grace. How to change the purpose and meaning behind your parenting. It is a fantastic read, with many practical ways to put into practise these principles. I would recommended it to any Christian parents.

This is a brilliant book, it makes sense and gives things to think about. It does not provide a tick list of what to do and what not to do but it gives parents the basis to make their own decisions. I cannot recommend this book enough.

I think every parent would benefit from reading Kimmel's book. One of the best aspects is his discussion of his own failures with his own children, but also his description of how he recovered from some of his mistakes.

This would be a good book for heavy disciplinarians to read, but I wonder if they would be able to take on board what he says.

A good aspect of the book is his discussion of how often parents base their discipline of their children on ensuring that other parents approve of them! How true!

There are many amusing and provocative anecdotes, which will make you think.

I also recommend H Norman Wright's "How to Talk So your Kids will Listen."

Really enjoyed reading this book, it has a lot to offer and even from a non-Christian perspective, if you don't mind someone relating parenting to their beliefs, there's still a lot to offer. Was disappointed near the end to see the author wasn't against smacking though.
