Biography

The Tymes began as the Latineers in 1956. This Philadelphia ensemble's founding members were Donald Banks, Albert Berry, Norman Burnett, and George Hilliard. After a four-year apprenticeship on the city's club circuit, they changed their name to the Tymes in 1960 and added lead singer George Williams. They were signed by Cameo-Parkway in 1963 following a successful appearance at a ... Read more in Amazon's Tymes Store

This is an excellent album. The Tymes had 3 or 4 minor hits in the uk - all featured on the first part of this 2 on 1 album. You little trustmaker, someway -somehow, The crutch., and their biggest hit ' Ms Grace. The second album was recorded several years earlier.. and has mostly standards like 'Alfie, Wichita Lineman, look of love, and 'People which was a minor hit for them in the late sixties. They are all good tracks though and well worth having at a bargain 2 for 1 price.

Two brilliant, very different, albums paired on one cd 4 Jan. 2010
By Jim Bagley - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Philadelphia's The Tymes had a trio of top 20 hits released in 1963 on the Cameo-Parkway label ("Wonderful! Wonderful!," "Somewhere," and the chart-topper "So Much In Love"). Unfortunately, the British Invasion and a crumbling record label kept them off the upper regions of the charts for the next five years. A remake of "People" from the musical Funny Girl for the Columbia label put them back in the pop and r&B top 40 in late '68/early '69, and led to the creation of the People album which makes up the second half of this cd. People is a an interesting hodgepodge of movie themes (The Look Of Love, Alfie, The Love Of Ivy), show tunes (the title track, Make Someone Happy), current hits (Wichita Lineman, For Once In My Life, Those Were The Days), and standards (God Bless The Child), and a couple of new songs (The Love That You're Looking For, City). What unifies this eclectic album is the incredible harmonizing of The Tymes. They make everything sound great. The orchestration is also top-notch.
In spite of the success of the "People" single and the quality of the People album, The Tymes were dropped by Columbia. They resurfaced in 1974 on the RCA label with the soulful Trustmaker album which leads off this cd. The strongest album of their career, Trustmaker includes their top 20 pop and r&B hit "You Little Trustmaker" and the uniquely lush yet finger snapping "Ms Grace" which topped the British charts but inexplicably bombed on the US charts. Even better than these gems is Trustmaker's nine-plus minute "Are You Lookin'," a sociologic tale of hypnotically epic proportions. The success of the Trustmaker album led to additional albums on the RCA label, the most noteworthy contents of which was the top 3 r&b hit "It's Cool" in 1976. I would have loved to have seen "It's Cool" included as a bonus track on this already stellar cd. Maybe it is being saved for another Tymes' two-fer. We can only hope.
