4.0 out of 5 stars Give it a try - it's a hidden gem! 24 Oct 2012
Format:Blu-ray
Forget about cult status claims (so many so-called 'cult' movies are rubbish)..

Don't worry about it being set in the "small isolated town with the space monster" theme..

This movie is SO MUCH better than others I've seen that have been raved over - others have obvious plot devices, poor scripting and me shouting at the TV that "They wouldn't do THAT, you tosser script-writer!!". NOT THIS ONE!

It's simple:

This movie is worth watching. It has very likeable characters, a little stereotypical humour, lovely video work and the CGI is really good. With some of these movies they hide cheap-arse CGI with darkness and tiny amount of 'tentacle-from-the-bush' scenes - not this one, the monster is THERE, house sized, eating things! And it looks GOOD, a proper amount of money has been used on the CGI work.

The theme is fun too - having to stay drunk so you don't get eaten.. with the problem that recurrent drinkers often need more to get drunk. the girl gets drunk on what another bar client has for starters!

I'm not saying it's award winning (although I would vote for it in a top 10). If you don't already like this sort of movie, it won't change your mind.

If you DO like this theme (Tremors, Slither.. any sort of space-alien tentacle monster or genetic escapee) then you WILL enjoy this movie.

Pull up the foot stool, grab the bowl of popcorn/packet of crisps, grab a beer/wine/fizzy drink and just have a GOOD TIME!

4.0 out of 5 stars Luck of the Irish 26 Mar 2013
Format:DVD
From a pretty average start `Grabbers' soon gets going and shows its true colours, i.e. it's not just a horror, but a pretty tongue-in-cheek comedy. And that's where its strength lies. It's at its best when it's being slightly cheeky. Yes, there's a reasonable amount of gore (but not that much). What little budget there is has been spent on the creatures themselves. And, for a mere (in Hollywood terms) £2 million the monsters are actually pretty well done. They're all computer-generated, but the CGI fits in seamlessly with the real actors all around them.

The film is about a sea-full of tentacled monsters who descend on an island off the coast of Ireland and start sucking the blood of the hapless locals. However, as luck would have it, these beastly parasites are allergic to the taste of alcohol. Therefore, all that needs doing to survive is getting out-of-your-face drunk. Of course, fighting back while plastered is actually quite hard!

Also, the film benefits from seeing the monsters (in the full) early on. In other similar monster-movies, you only get to see a tentacle here or there until the final scenes (normally to save on special effects), but here you see them `full frontal' from pretty early on.

Most of the characters are hardly developed, but if they're funny then we can forgive that.

If you're a fan of such cinema greats (!) as `Deep Rising' then this is in the same cheeky little league of its own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Must See Movie 23 Sep 2012
Format:DVD
I can't remember who recommended I see Grabbers but I'm glad they did. It's one of the best Irish films ever made, certainly one of the most unique. It's a heartwarming horror film. Now that's two sentiments you don't always get in this genre. It follows two guards investigating a series of weird occurrences on an island off the Irish coast and becomes something else entirely. I was not expecting to enjoy Grabbers as much as I did and I think that's a testament to the filmmakers. The script is hilarious and clever, the photography is stunning, the monsters look epic and far better than you'd expect for a movie that was surely shot on a shoestring budget, but it's the cast that are fantastic fun to watch and make the film. Ruth Bradley (who plays the tightly wound Lisa) is particularly brilliant. I would absolutely recommend this film to anyone, and I reckon cult status is all but assured. A definite must see movie.
