Book Description

12 July 2001 Explorer Maps
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The main advantages of this map are the geographical design of the sheetlines to capture the best local coverage, and the coverage of a larger area for value for money. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walker's Essentials 14 May 2004
Format:Map
It hardly seems necessary to write a review of an Ordinance Survey map, but for anyone not familiar with them, these Explorer maps offer a detailed plan of the countryside, indicating contours, paths, features (and dangers) in full colour. Absolutely essential for anyone planning to walk in the hills, or even the low levels - OS maps provide you with a route planner, a ready source of information, and an intriguing read! Simply studying maps will help you understand the history of the locale and bring questions to mind which you might care to unravel by a walk in the landscape ... and a walk to your local library.
As I say, a review of Ordinance Survey seems superfluous, yet the maps are far more enduring and far more fascinating than most books published. Buy a map, open it out on the floor, and study it. It will fascinate you, it will envigorate you, it will get you going places you'd never noticed before. But a word of warning: if you plan going for a walk, wear the right equipment, especially if you are walking in the higher areas in Scotland, Wales, or the North of England. And, if you choose to walk in the hills, learn to navigate and learn some mountain survival techniques - the weather doesn't show up on the map, but it can break in minutes and leave you fighting for your life.
Enjoy an Ordnance Survey map ... but learn how to use it too.
