Product Description

Product Description

Providing an account of the development of democracy in Britain, this book starts from the "unreformed" political system before 1832 to the Parliamentary Reform Acts passed between 1832 and 1918, with the extension of the franchise, the secret ballot and the elimination of corrupt practices. The book also provides an examination of parliamentary reforms whilst exploring the changing role of the monarchy and the reasons for its survival, and the development of local government. It concludes by examining to what extent Britain possessed truly democratic political institutions after 1918.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, 30 Dec 2006
By H. R. Couchman (Redditch, Worcestershire, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a clear, concise and accurate introduction to parliamentary reform in the nineteenth century. A brilliant resource for students and teachers, it gives an appropriate range of useful statistics and contextual information, which provide an insight into the scale of reform and the attitudes of contemporaries. I referred to this book many times during A-level History, and it is still useful as a reminder of the main points at degree level.
