Product Description

Review

"A formidable and highly commendable introduction to British politics. It is packed with illustrations and boxed quotations. Its range, depth of understanding and ability to catch and retain the reader′s attention are impressive."

Times Higher Education Supplement

"John Kingdom has produced an impressive introduction to British government. It manages to combine comprehensive coverage, social and historical context, and the clever use of analytical approaches. Overall this is a first–class text for A–level and undergraduate students."

Martin Smith, University of Sheffield

"This book is written with wonderful clarity, and is presented with great user–friendliness. John Kingdom′s deep historical grip underpins his combination of descriptive style, explanatory rigour and intellectual challenge. It is a masterly account of both the old and new in the stable and changing institutions and processes of British government and politics in the contemporary world."

Adrian Leftwich, University of York

Product Description

The third edition of this best–selling, prize–winning textbook continues to lead the field with its widely acknowledged capacity to enthuse students through its challenging and thought–provoking style. With the reforming Blair government in its second term, evidence of popular disenchantment with traditional politics, globalization and new levels of terrorism, British politics continues in a state of dramatic flux. To chart the most recent developments in contemporary British politics, this edition has been updated in all its 22 chapters.

∗ Coherent structure of this single–authored textbook makes it exceptionally easy to use and draws the threads together with a holistic perspective

∗ Brings the subject to life by taking the reader beyond ′facts′ to the fascinating questions about power, ambition, intrigue and corruption in the real world of politics

∗ Attractively presented, with memorable quotations, cartoons, photographs, diagrams and tables to enliven the text and make the learning process involving and informative

∗ Glossary, impressive bibliography and up–to–date chronology.

∗ Supported by a textsite designed for students and lecturers: www.polity.co.uk/kingdom

Well established as a central text for students of British politics and government, the book has also proved of wide relevance throughout the social sciences.

I found this book really useful when doing AS level Government and Politics. There's a lot of detail, and is generally far beyond the knowledge required for A level, however it was so useful for reading around the subject. The book is very comprehensive and thorough. The author also has a very good style, which makes it highly readable. There are questions, summaries and ideas for discussion at the end of each chapter aswell - again good for studying. I definitely recommend the book.

This book certainly does have several faults: for readers well versed in specific areas of British politics - relations with the EU, for example, or the politics of the judiciary - the coverage in the relevant chapters will seem slight and basic.

However, given the constraints of the format (broadly covering everything you might need to know about the British political system) it is an excellent book, and unparalleled in my opinion. The chapters are encyclopaedic and well chosen, and cover everything you are likely to encounter on an introductory-level degree module. This is where Kingdom's book really distinguishes itself: it takes the theme of British politics far more broadly than most, and explores it from some fairly novel angles.

Kingdom also has a lively sense of humour that prevents the book becoming dry reading. There is excellent provision of further reading and sources, including many unorthodox suggestions - Yes Minister being one that crops up frequently - and the less committed reader will find plenty of accessible ideas for further work. To aid exam revision, there are also questions to test your understanding at the end of each chapter.

I would perhaps criticize this for its fairly low level of analysis, but as a first book on the subject it is excellent. Besides, if you decide it is thoroughly boring and unhelpful, at 850 pages, you can always use it to prop your door open. :)

This book provides what it promises - a good solid introduction to British politics. Kingdom makes this material, which is on the whole quite dry, a lighter read with countless jokes and anicdotes which make this one of the most readabale politics books for first year undergraduates. However, Kingdom's views of certain aspects of politics, particullarly the media, come through to strongly and the book is far from free of bias. At times Kingdom chooses rather to ignore other points of view than attempt to overcome them, which gives the book a falibility.

Though despite these faults the book is a good all round starting point for the studying of British Politics and depsite it's faults is essential reading.
