Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Gourmandises the French word for sweets (or candies) is the appropriate title of French pop princess Alizée's debut album. Like an aniseed ball, the mix of pop tunes and ballads are pleasant and consistent throughout, but at the same time never too adventurous. The French lyrics may sour the album for some but the catchy tunes and lyrics (even though they may mean little to your average Anglophile) highlight the universal language of pop.

Following the global smash "Moi…Lolita", are two similarly sounding tunes "Lui ou Toi" and "L'Alizé" which once again showcase Alizée's mature and breathy vocals. Other tracks are also equally sweet and familiar, with the opening to "Mon Maquis" sounding remarkably like T'Pau's "Heart and Soul". The highlight of the album has to be the addictive but slightly corny "JBG"--James Bond Girl. Alleged focused around Alizée's own life experiences, all of the tracks have been written and produced by top French duo Mylène Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat. Très bon! --John Galilee

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best 'pop' albums ever, 16 Feb 2002
By Mr. Peter Cooper (Louth, Lincolnshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In early 2001, I heard a lot of people saying Alizée is "France's answer to Britney Spears". A cliché statement, perhaps, but 2001 has been a banner year for Alizée. Not only has she triumphed over the French charts, but the German, Dutch, Russian and Japanese ones too.

2002 looks to be even better for the pretty French 'chanteuse', with Alizée attacking the UK charts in February, and possibly the US after that. This album may be a year old, but it's as impressive as ever.. and it's release in the UK now is well timed.

Being able to appreciate, or understand, French isn't a prerequisite for this album. Even if you've been studying French for a while, you'll find many of the lyrics rather cryptical. You'll enjoy a lot of wordplay and puns, especially in 'Moi Lolita'. Some English even creeps into the album on tracks such as 'J.B.G.' (James Bond Girl).

As with many French albums, there are a few incidents where the lyrics are too direct and blunt. 'Je sais que cette hymen durera longtemps' (I know that this hymen will last a long time), for example.

When you first put this CD on, you might be surprised by how deep her voice is. Don't worry, Alizée is simply demonstrating her impressive vocal range, and she leaps between sultry lows and dizzy highs throughout the album.

Unlike many pop albums, this album has a very interesting sound overall. Some songs are dark, some are very much 'pop', yet all have the 'traditional' broody creepy French mood in them. Yes, this is a pop album full of minor chords..

So, in 2002 as in 2000 and 2001.. still an excellent effort all round! Alizée, and this CD, is an excellent package most people are sure to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly different pop album, 13 Mar 2002
By simon.silvie@tesco.net (Basingstoke, UK) - See all my reviews
Hooked by the breath of fresh air that was Moi Lolita, I was amazed at arrangement and delivery of the rest of the Farmer and Boutonnat songs. Lui ou toi and Gourmnadises, Parler tout bas and A quoi reve une jeune fille are my favourites, but there isn't really bad track on the album.

Gourmandises really is a refreshing change from the wall to wall Anglo-American pop and I can't really see the language being an barrier. It manages to squeeze more emotion than usual into the pop package and I will be disapointed if we don't hear more of Alizee in the UK CHarts.

I will look out for more output from Alizee, hunt down other songs by Farmer and Boutonnat and dust off my MC Solar CDs!

One of the best pop CDs I have heard in a long time

4.0 out of 5 stars sweet french pop, 3 Mar 2002
I love the French language, and I speak it, so when I heard "Moi...Lolita" I was curious to hear the rest of "Gourmandises". Some of the songs are kind of childish- for example "Mon Maquis"- it's about a bedroom as a hiding place. Songs like "Lui ou Toi" are kind of meaningless pop, but apart from those two, it's a cool album. Alizee has a great voice, and songs such as "Veni Vedi Vici" and "Gourmandises" just stick in your head.
