Product Description

Yerba mate is a traditional South American herbal tea, famous for its health benefits. It gives energy, can suppress the appetite, and is full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Traditionally it is drunk from a hollowed gourd and sipped using a bombilla to filter out the tea leaves. It is recommendable to cure your gourd before use to prevent splitting and improve flavour: How do I cure my gourd? We recommend the following procedure to cure a mate: 1. Remove any debris With a natural gourd it is perfectly normal for there to be 'paper' like debris inside, and possibly some seeds (imagine that when growing, the gourd is like a pumpkin or butternut squash). The inside maybe slightly black. Wash out the gourd with warm water - no soap - and scrape the debris out with a spoon. If the gourd is a pear shaped one, DO NOT REMOVE THE 'BUD' - this will cause leakage. 2. Disinfect - optional Pass salt around the inside. The salt acts as a disinfectant. This step is also helpful for later on - if your gourd develops a mould you can remove and disinfect for peace of mind. 3. Cure Fill the gourd with old, used yerba tea leaves and leave for a few hours. If you don't have any used yerba, you can use split teabags, or soak some fresh yerba in water and use that. It is important that the yerba/tea is just wet, DON'T FILL THEG OURD AND LEAVE SOAKING IN WATER, this will often lead to the gourd splitting. Some people add alcohol to the wet yerba (any alcohol will do) - this is optional. 4. Ready for use! You can now prepare a normal mate. Over time the gourd will absorb more and more flavour of your yerba. Ongoing care of your gourd It is important that after use you remove used yerba and keep your gourd dry, otherwise mould is likely to form.

It was the not too favourable first review of this product that actually prompted me to buy this set. I was tired of buying maté gourds and they were so small that you'd get a few sips out of them, then you have to get back up for more water. It is very usual for maté drinkers in South America to carry a flask around with them to top up their gourd when they need to. This is all well and good, BUT when I am curled up with a good book, I don't like to keep getting up because the gourd is so small that the water is gone in a minute. Maybe I'm lazy, but part of the enjoyment of maté is sitting back, taking time for oneself, appreciating the flavour and being revitalised. So, and I am sorry; I don't mean to be rude, but I think that the other review is BS. I own quite a number of maté gourds and bombillas and I found this one to be a great size. A fact that may interest you is that in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia and Brazil, it is not unusual for people to drink maté out of everyday mugs - it just lets you have more time rather than getting up every minute to refill it.
What you must bear in mind is that this is a quaint, traditional, calabash-type gourd. It has the attraction of being bigger than many of the tiny gourds you see around. As it is a fruit (and this is how maté is traditionally drank - from a dried, hollowed calabash) it has the attraction of also being unique. To say any gourd is "too big" to be used is a bit nonsensical to me. This is for serious maté-drinkers who want the true, traditional experience.
The bombilla is attractive, elegant and very easy to clean as the little filter unscrews from the body of the straw and has a hinge so that it bends in half. I would recommend, if you don't have one, that you get a bombilla cleaner to ensure the inside of the straw stays clean and free from any build-up. They are inexpensive and I'm pretty sure you can buy them from uru-shop.

It's small. The bombilla is good. As it IS an authentic gourd hollowed out you do have to clean the inside and remove the pith as in the instructions which came with the kit. I like it overall - but as with all these devices, because they are natural products, they can and will leak out the bottom. Don't leave fluid in it and keep it dry - basically follow the instructions, but it is quite high maintenance.

Far too hot. Gives off bitter taste to the tea. Really hard to clean and maintain. Disappointing. Only useful as ornament. Did follow the preparation and cleaning instructions to the letter. Far too much bother in our opinion.

Unfortunately, although it is meant to be for mate it leaks when water is put inside it. Thus rendering it useless

I get to drink my yerba mate in an authentic way although sometimes I do still just make it in a cup, it is just nice to have the option to be more authentic and it definitely tastes different in the gourd

I bought this along with the Yerba Mate Guarana tea. I am not totally convinced that this is the best holder for this tea.
I think I would have preferred a wooden one as I feel that this one could crack/ go mouldy? It is still new, so we will have to wait and see how long it lasts.
The Bombilla is great and works well.
