Very Nice.,

Supposedly the very first 'Goth-metal' album, this mixes the brooding heaviness of their first album, 'Lost Paradise' with a sweeping dark and sinister edge. Strangely catchy, some of the songs have female vocals used to great effect, but the album as a whole is quite hard to get into, especially if you have got into PL through their more recent material, which is very different. However, I grew to like it and now it is easily one of my favourite albums. It's quite strange how some of these songs that seem so inaccessible at first can become completely lodged in your brain, like some annoyingly catchy chart song.

To be honest, this isn't really my style, I prefer industrial stuff and Paradise Lost's brilliant last-but-one album 'Host', but that said this is quite good. The vocals don't appeal much to me - Nick Holmes has definitely improved. This, however, was the start of a journey that led to later (and better) output, like 'Draconian Times' and 'Host'. If you like My Dying Bride or Fields of the Nephilim you may like this. It seems inaccessible at first, but it does grow on you. Standout tracks are 'Gothic' and 'Falling Forever'.
