'Gossip Girl' is obviously the first in the series of quite famous novels by Cecily von Ziegesar about the lives of wealthy teens in Manhattan's most exclusive suburb, the Upper East Side. Because of the success of the TV show based on this novel, 'Gossip Girl' is definitely considered queen bee of its genre, which is why I was slightly disappointed when I read it. It just isn't as funny as 'Mean Girls' or its British equivalent 'Popular,' and 'Gossip Girl's' lead characters aren't anywhere near as likable or even believable when compared to characters from shows or books like 'Clueless,' 'Glee,' 'Popular,' 'Pretty Little Liars' or even 'The Gallagher Girls'. Part of the problem is that it seems to be all about clothes and labels and who's sleeping with who, which made me think the glamour had taken over from the characters/story. At times, I also found Blair Waldorf to be a little bit annoying and much preferred other queen bees like Regina George, Meredith Harper or Sharpay Evans (HSM = guilty pleasure!) But, some of the other characters, especially Serena, were really great and even if you didn't care about most of the people in 'Gossip Girl,' Cecily von Ziegesar is definitely a good enough writer to keep you interested in the storyline so you keep reading 'Gossip Girl' to the very last page.
