Biography

There has never been mistaking Sinead O’Connor for anybody else. A voice born to break as many hearts as windows, as tender as it is lethal. The face, simultaneously that of ocean-wide-eyed angel and shaven-headed warrior queen. And the spirit, courageous in its conviction, undaunted by controversy and fortified with endless reserves of resilience. Sinead O’Connor is that rare ... Read more in Amazon's Sinead O'Connor Store

This is a fantastic EP, I bought this back in 1997 when it came out. But I notice that it is now very difficult to get hold of. So my advice to anyone out there is to snap up a copy of this EP while you still can.
I am no authority on Sinead's music, but bought this EP after buying her Universal Mother CD a year and half earlier. All I can say is that the songs on this EP are peerless and sublime. There are 6 tracks on this EP and they are all brilliant. (also there is a remixed version of Fire on Babylon, which is included as a separate CD, this version is just great also!).
Sinead without question has the most beautiful voice, but on this EP, the voice is matched with songs of equal calibre. As i said before I am no authority on Sinead's entire back catalogue, but this EP represents a very rare conjunction of her awesome vocals with great great songs. Unmatched in my humble opinion.
Brilliant EP, a true gem.
So buy a copy while you still can....
ciao

Check out Sinead's version of 'He moves through the fair' on you tube. Spellbinding. And the way she sings the last verse is so so moving. Its on here, and everything else is as good. This is a real gem

Her best, her brightest, her most beautiful... 8 Mar 2003
By "troytron" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Sinead fans were perplexed when, suffering a six-year hiatus between full original albums, Mizz Banshee released this vicious teaser. It turns out to be, perhaps, one of the greatest *incomplete* artistic canvases ever proffered by a recording "star." Gospel Oak, though an EP, is easily Sinead O'Connor's most realized, honest, defining, and elemental work. Owing to her intriguing behavior as an artist, she toured the world to support this teeny little acoustic, made-in-the-bedroom record, while she refused to tour behind Atlantic's multi-million dollar "Let's Re-invent Sinead!" whopper in 2000...the expensive 'Faith and Courage' album. However, this little forgotten piece of brilliance is the record where she truly rediscovered her jaw-droppin' chops as a songwriter, after the hell America put her through in 1992. Turns out that America learned a bit more about the Pope's organization in the meantime, and Sinead, who had effectively squelched her mainstream career, will never recover while the papacy will continue to drag on. But... every song on this record is a vocal masterpiece, a gem of poignant-yet-incisve songwriting, and sheer genius that, for a change, makes somebody actually proud to be a member of the human race. If you can get a copy of this widely shifted disc...do it. Don't put it off. You want real magic in your tired life? Look no further. I am not remotely using hyberbole here. 'Gospel Oak' is *that* good.

Sinead O'Connor's Greatest Album : And its an EP 2 Dec 2008
By Marc Cabir Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
What a pity that Sinead O'Connor didn't choose to release her "Gospel Oak" as a full-fledged album. This was exactly the musical direction she was meant to take, and the release of this EP more than a decade ago remains one of her more baffling musical decisions. It was the first time Sinead had tackled songs such as these, with an emphasis on a pop sensibility that bordered on folk, but the true strength of the songs here are their messages - both universal and political.

"This is to Mother You" works both as a feminist anthem as well as a plaintive love ballad. This was Sinead's "Earth Mother" phase and her musical output was just fantastic. The gem "I Am Enough for Myself" is a stunning piece of vocal, with a message of self-empowerment and deliverance. "Petit Poulet" seems childlike but hides a deeper message, but the true stunner is the ballad "This is a Rebel Song", which tackles Anglo-Irish politics through the lens of a woman being left behind. Beautiful.

The final track is a version of "He Moved Through the Fair". I've heard live versions of it on other Sinead compilations, but this is the only CD where you'll find this version. Really something. "Gospel Oak" is thoroughly enjoyable for many reasons, but primarily because the production is so good, and Sinead's voice has never sounded better. I've always held that this one and her "Universal Mother" CD have been her best works ever, and you should try to track down this out of print CD just to possess these rare, rare songs.

1. This Is To Mother You
2. I Am Enough For Myself
3. Petit Poulet
4. 4 My Love
5. This Is A Rebel Song
6. He Moved Through The Fair

SINEAD at her best. 9 Mar 2002
By milkweed - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I was somewhat disappointed of Faith and Courage because it didn't meet the standards of this release.
Musically this is gem. Vocally it is amazing. It works because sinead is at her best when she just takes it and goes with it. When she tries too hard to make a point, it fails. This album is pure love, devotion and works.
When critics(men usually;I am a man by the way) review her, they drag her down because of things she does. ...
When I play sinead, people come to me and ask who is this. When they find out it's her singing, they are surprised. She's worked with so many people, awhich is her strength. From soundtracks, to groups, world artist etc...
I have turn so many people over to her real talent.
Sinead is a woman who sings, she has more in her catelog that I
wish people would hear.
Sineads voice is a soothing voice, yes a lullaby, I feel at easy when I listen too this album, at peace.
Too bad there are not audio clips. ...

A Rare Gem 20 April 2003
By David - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I bought this recently after seeing it in a shop for the first time [in Australia].
From start to finish it is a collection of beautiful, gentle music. The lyrics are some of her best and the instrumentation often sparse but perfect. The highlight for me was the last track, 'He Moved Through The Fair', a live recording spotlighting the quality of Sinead's voice.

Great Album 21 Nov 2007
By Sheeba - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This EP is great...as are all of Sinead's albums. Her music is timeless. Still sounds as good as it ever did. Gospel Oak contains one the most beautifully written (and sung) songs about mother loss...if for nothing else buy this EP for this perfect song... This Is To Mother You.
