5.0 out of 5 stars Kingdom Theology for Life, 31 Mar 2003
I bought this as a recommended book whilst doing a Wordplus course with new frontiers to help with an essay on the Kingdom of God. I hadn't read any really good books on the Kingdom of God - they had either focused on one side of the arguement about it being here and now yet later, or being a spiritual place, etc.
What impressed me about this book is Ladd's ability to take the different theological views regarding the subject, explain how they tie in to Biblical teaching and then weaving them into the scriptural picture of the Kingdom of God being present but not now.
For such a difficult subject (try to look at references to the Kingdom in a concordance and you will see what I mean) Ladd has written a very readable and enjoyable book. If you want to know what it is like to live in the Kingdom of God then this is the book for you.
I would highly recommend this book to new Christians who want to know about Kingdom life and to established Christians looking for encouragement in their daily walk.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book every Christian should read!, 5 Jul 2005
By Gary Gillespie (Hoffman Estates, IL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Gospel of the Kingdom is a terrific book which every Christian should read. A curious fact is that it was written in 1959, well ahead of its time. We are subjected to various views of the Kingdom of God and how it relates to the Church, Israel and the end times. There is much confusion as to what the Kingdom is, and when and where will it be. Ladd answers these critical questions. The chapters deal with 1. What is the Kingdom of God. 2. The Kingdom is tomorrow 3. The Kingdom is today. In addition he gives a good exposition of how to understand the parables of Kingdom and an excellent section on how to understand the Sermon on the Mount. He takes the difficult passages of Jesus' sermon and answers the questions what does Jesus mean that one should "cut off your hand" or "gouge out your eye" if necessary to enter the Kingdom.
It is a practical book as well which calls Christians to commit all to the advancement of the Kingdom of God and the role that God wants all of us to play in its institution. It is easy to read and extremely informative. I could not recommend it more highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kingdom of God, 11 Dec 2006
By M. Howard "thewitnessman" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
`The Gospel of the Kingdom' is a theological work that addresses one of the most important and possibly least understood messages of the Bible. As George Eldon Ladd explains in the opening paragraphs, the gospel of the Kingdom of God is not an irrelevant concept applicable only to the Jews of the day and their messianic expectancies. We come to realize that Christ's proclamation of the kingdom is in fact the answer to what Ladd says is the modern man's question: "what is the meaning and the goal of human history?" This is a profound question, since it encapsulates into one sentence the deep fears, insecurities and needs of modern society.

To begin his discussion with such a universally relevant question requires that the author continues in a style that is accessible to the average reader but not at the expense of academic integrity. It is then helpful that Ladd attacks this subject from an academic viewpoint, but also with the intention of making it applicable to the average readers own life without the assumption of his readers having prior theological training. He presents his knowledge and revelation in a lucid style that increases the relevancy of his discussion to the readers mind and life. "This is the primary concern of these expositions, that the reader might meet the kingdom of God, or rather, that the Kingdom of God might meet them." (p23)
