More About the Author

Julian Fellowes, actor, writer, director, producer, was educated at Ampleforth, Magdalene College, Cambridge and Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. He trained in repertory theatre at Northampton and Harrogate.

As an actor he is probably best known for his portrayal of the incorrigible Lord Kilwillie in the BBC's 'Monarch of the Glen', as well as film roles in 'Shadowlands' with Anthony Hopkins, 'Damage' with Jeremy Irons and 'Tomorrow Never Dies' with Pierce Brosnan.

As a writer for TV, he is responsible for the scripts of 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' (winner of an International EMMY, 1995) and 'The Prince and the Pauper' (nominated for a BAFTA, 1997), which he also produced. His first screenplay for the cinema was 'Gosford Park', directed by Robert Altman, which won a plethora of prizes, not least the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

He wrote the screenplay for the recent version of 'Vanity Fair', starring Reese Witherspoon, and 'The Young Victoria', currently in post-production. His debut as a Director, 'Separate Lies', starring Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson and Rupert Everett, was released to acclaim in 2006. He presented the BBC series, 'Most Mysterious Murders'.

As well as his novels 'Snobs' and 'Past Imperfect' (UK and US bestsellers), he has written a children's book published in 2006, and the book for the musical of 'Mary Poppins' for Cameron Mackintosh and Disney. Julian is married to Emma, nee Kitchener, and they have one son, Peregrine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Altman and a great screenplay 4 Nov 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you've seen the Robert Altman film, "Gosford Park," and especially if you're sure you missed something critical but aren't sure just what it was, this is the book for you. Julian Fellowes' brilliant screenplay not only brings into the foreground all the dialogue and physical action that flowed through the film in typical Altman fashion, but it is accompanied by highly illuminating notes and photos identifying all the players and where they fit in the story. I bought it to use as an aid to my second viewing of the film, at home on DVD, but I found it so fascinating and well written that I read it long before the film was released on video. All screenplays should be this good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful Reading 20 July 2002

This script is mesmerizing. The subtleties of the dialogue clearly define the constitution of the characters. It makes the film more enjoyable. I now understand more clearly what the actions on the screen represented and what many of the motivations were. So much went into this story that when you think about it, this was an incredible piece of filmmaking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read about Julian Fellowes on Wikipedia 13 Jan 2010

I purchased the shooting scripting after viewing the movie. The dialogue was so rapid that I had difficulty understanding some of it because of the English accents. The shooting script also described the family and servant relationships. The shooting script does not follow verbatim the movie but close enough. The script has an afterward from Fellowes describing the collaboration and casting effort with Robert Altman. You also learn that Ivor Novello (Northam's character) was the only non-fictional character in the movie.

The movie: I loved the music and will buy the soundtrack. Jeremy Northam has a great singing voice but evidently the songs from the movie are his only recordings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gosford Park. 18 Feb 2011

I had never seen a shooting script in the book form before. I found it fun to read, Although I was a little dissapointed that it seemed to have left out so many things from the movie.
One of the things it did for me, is clearified the diologe that is always so difficult for me to make out in movies.
I will view the movie again, and because of the shooting script I will better understand the actors diologe.

Thank you for your good service. I always feel confident when I work with or through Amazon.
