4.0 out of 5 stars Gorilla School 30 Nov 2010
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
`Gorilla School' is an Animal Planet documentary series that follows the lives of three gorillas from Howletts and Port Lympne Wildlife Parks in England as they are moved to a reserve in Africa and taught how to be `wild' Gorillas for eventual release. This looks at their sadness at being separated from the keepers that hand reared them in the UK and the skills they are taught to survive in the wild. Oudiki, one of the gorillas, gets stricken with an illness that will leave you concerned for his safety and you will laugh at the mischievous Kouki as she cavorts in the tree tops. The reserve is funded by the Aspinall foundation, made famous by John Aspinall who set up the parks and his son Damian is also featured in this documentary. It is uncertain how successful this Gorilla School will be and what the eventual outcome will be, but it is delightful to watch these handsome little gorillas as they settle into their new environment. As a brief aside, I am curious why the packaging features a mountain gorilla when the gorillas in this documentary are western lowland, but that is a very minor point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this series - highly recommended! 2 Jan 2011

I highly recommended this Gorilla School series especially for anyone who enjoyed orangutan diaries. It follows the story of 4 infant Western lowland gorillas, 3 brought up at Howletts in UK and 1 orphaned in Gabon after family was killed by poachers. All 4 gorillas are being taught how to survive in the Gabon jungle in the hope that they can evenually be completely released and independant as wild gorillas. The aim of the Howletts team and conservationists out in the field is to repopulate a million acre forest in Gabon with gorillas in an area where they previously went extinct. The ecoguards work tirelessly to protect this forest from poachers but they do come into conflict with armed poachers during this series. We also see 2 other groups of gorillas that are now successfully living wild and free in the forest and that were previously released by Howletts, one group now has 3 wild born babies of their own. It is confusing as to why they have a mountain gorilla baby on the from of the dvd cover though as the infants in this series are all Western lowland gorillas in Gabon. 5 out of 5 stars and one to watch time and again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just had to have this! 21 Jan 2013

After watching a clip on you tube where the presenter went back to the jungle where he released the gorilla 5 years previously I was absolutely astounded by what followed - truly amazing and the whole series contained in this DVD was fascinating, these animals are very clever and show emotions on a par with humans, perhaps even superior, as in my opinion I do not think they would lie and cheat like humans.
