Format:Audio CD
Jagged and driving.... from the opening staccato stabbing strings to the added brutal thuds of percussion/winds and the angular ensemble vocals. The piece is impecably played and recorded and carries all of the angst of its subject matter - a setting of the letters of the archetypal tortured artist genius VVG. As with much of Gordon's music a key factor is a) the sophistication of interlocking complex musical cross-rhythms creating whole new types of grooves - all sounding perfectly natural but just try counting it.... and b) that slightly warped dark and individual approach to tonal harmony. Intensely dramatic and taking no prisoners I think this is music that will particularly appeal to lovers of avant garde rock music (take the passage in The Hague Part 2 at 3:42 for instance - it reminds one of Univers Zero or Present). Those already familiar with Gordon's work will recognise his re-application of the opening movement of 'Weather' which accompanies a plainsong-like aria, or the 'Aries' section's use of tetxures very similar to the third movement of 'Trance'. However, added to this sort of self-quotation is a new kind of lyricism which uses these complex textures as backdrops to a slightly more expressionistic end - this is a welcome development in Gordon's music. Throughout the piece there are two very slow sections (one of which is the cathartic concluding section 'St Remy') which provide 'ambient' relief and which help to create a very balanced and satisfying overall listening experience. All in all a very enjoyable and engrossing piece of music which I would recommend to any ambitious listener.

Michael Gordon's best CD yet emphasises why he is considered the finest of the thrid generation minimalsts, and a rival as much as a heir to Glass and Reich. Dark, driving and utterly compelling, this is muscular minimalism at its very best.

Powerful! 19 April 2008

I loved Michael Gordon's Van Gogh! Musically, the rhythms are strong and compelling, and the variety of instrumental textures is appealing. The texts (letters to his brother Theo) are very moving, particularly in the section called The Hague 2. As with most classical vocal music,it's not always easy to understand the words, so take time to sit down and follow the text in the booklet while you are listening. This is the most exciting new work I've heard in a long time.
