Product Description

From the Inside Flap
The original ‘black and fallow setter’ that has become known as the Gordon Setter is a stylish hunting dog, whose dignified and intelligent bearing has attracted Gundog aficionados and pet lovers alike. Among the largest of the Gundog breeds, the Gordon Setter possesses a bold, outgoing personality and a kind disposition that distinguish him among pure-bred dogs. Known for his distinctive black and tan coat pattern and his proudly carried head, the Gordon Setter offers an owner both brains and beauty, and no small amount of brawn. This book provides the much-needed information about the Gordon Setter, its history, an insightful look at the breed’s characteristics and standard, as well as the proper selection of a puppy, feeding, training and preventative health care. In addition to an authoritative text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full colour, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are!
highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about his new Gordon Setter. Whether it’s basic obedience training, toileting or hunting, flea prevention, coat care or nutritional requirements, this book is the way to proper care and prevention of common problems, providing the reader with the necessary guidance from puppyhood through the senior years. Beauty, brains and bird sense. These glowing accolades describe the modern Gordon Setter as accurately as they did the 'setting' dog that roamed the highland moors centuries ago. Those who own the Gordon Setter would heartily agree. Although originally developed as a superior working dog with a distinct tri-colour coat, over the years the Gordon has typically been kept as a dual-purpose personal gundog and family companion. It is said that once you live with a Gordon, you would own no other breed. History records the origins of the Gordon Setter very simply: he is a native of the hills of bonny Scotland. Beyond that singular fact, specific details of his origin lie hidden in the rolling mists of his ancestral birthplace. Early literature suggests the existence of black-and-tan setters as far back as the 15th century in Scotland and England. The early setter breeds are believed to have evolved from the first spaniel dogs whose name reflects their own country of origin. Spaniels (or 'Spanyells' as they were called during the era of Henry VIII) took their name from Spain, long considered the homeland of the spaniel that later found its way to England, France and Ireland. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for the first time dog owner of a Gordon Setter, 31 Dec 2001
This book is attractively presented & lavishly illustrated in colour. It is most suitable for someone who is not an experienced dog owner, and who has bought, or is contemplating owning a Gordon Setter.

The first three chapters on History, Characteristics and the Breed Standard are specifically about the Gordon Setter.

The illustration inside the front cover depicts an excellent example of the breed with the points of the standard clearly laid out.

The chapter on history covers a summary of the origin and development of the breed and has several pictures of prominent early Gordons.

The balance of the book is general information about raising, training and caring for a dog, with specific reference to this breed.

While there is little to interest the Gordon Setter enthusiast, I would recommend it strongly to a new dog owner.
