Product Description

Classic Will Hay comedy. Inept schoomaster William Potts (Hay) is parachuted into Nazi Germany when British intelligence discover that he is the spitting image of an enemy master spy. Upon his arrival, Potts is put to work teaching young German spies how to appear authentically British - and is soon employing his own highly unorthodox educational methods!

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Future action-film expert Basil Dearden cut his directorial teeth on The Goose Steps Out, a wartime espionage comedy. The star (and co-director) is Will Hay, a major British comedian of the era whose stock in trade was playing pompous, inefficient schoolmasters. This time Hay and his confederates cross the path of a gang of Nazi spies, operating covertly in London. Using his wits (such as they are), Hay collars the Nazis and preserves the Empire. The popularity of Will Hay did not extend to American audiences, who couldn't see anything funny in such a pathetic character, but The Goose Steps Out was a big moneyspinner in Britain. The film also served as the screen debut of 20-year-old Peter Ustinov. ...The Goose Steps Out

1.0 out of 5 stars BE WARNED! 23 May 2009
I am very grateful to the other reviewers for pointing out the scandalous cuts made in the "Optimum Home Entertainment" release of this classic film; I have certainly avoided wasting my money on it! Unfortunately the previous VHS release (DD Home Entertainment) also suffers from these pointless cuts, so presumably the same print was used.
Hopefully the full version will appear on TV soon...

2.0 out of 5 stars Classic Film but avoid this Video Version 20 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This is an absolute classic of wartime comedy. Will Hay, Charles Hawtery and Peter Ustinov all on great form. I would, under normal circumstances, give this film 5 out of 5 but I have just purchased a copy and found that two of the funniest scenes in the film have been cut from this print. The two scenes are the pronunciation of British towns (Slough, Cirencester etc) and the 'Invasion of Britain' scene on the train (Panzers down in the Severn Tunnel etc.). So my advice would be definitely see this film but save your money and wait for it to be shown on television.

1.0 out of 5 stars POINTLESS 26 Feb 2009
A total rip off , do not spend your hard earned money on this utterly pointless release of what is a fabulous film in its original length , whoever is responsible for cutting it to ribbons has no idea of the comic genius this country once produced.

1.0 out of 5 stars misled and anoyed 14 July 2009
First saw this film as a boy and loved it, especially the part where the english towns etc were mis pronounced. But this is a blatent case of false avertising, as that very sceene apears on the rear jacket of the cover but not in the film. If i had bought this from a shop instaed of on line i would have returned it and demanded my money back. My advice, dont buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Who is responsible - bring them to me! 8 July 2009
I'm certainly not going to blow good money on a butchered masterpiece. I concur with those who have obviously been bitterly disappointed - indeed I would go so far as to say robbed. Furthermore who is responsible for including a review of the VHS version which refers to the very scenes that are missing on this release - Mein Gott bring them to me, schnell!

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs 1 Jan 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Although the description of this DVD says that it is 79 minutes long (which is the actual length of the original film), it is actually only 66 minutes so 13 minutes have gone missing somewhere. This is enough of a discrepancy to make a real difference, especially as some of the funniest scenes are the ones missing. A pretty pointless release which I can absolutely not recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars A tad disappointing 10 Feb 2009
Having seen the film on television some time ago I was probably expecting too much. The film is still very good with some classic scenes but the DVD has some excellent scenes cut. One is in the classroom with the banter between Will Hay with Peter Ustinov and Charles Hawtry and again in the train planning the attack where there was an very funny play on words with the names of towns and counties. It states that the film runs for 79 minutes when it is actually 66 minutes. A shame as it is probably Will Hays funniest film.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'll save my cash 11 Dec 2009
As a lifelong admirer of Will Hay I certainly will not buy this cut down version.

Thank you for the warnings.

I wonder how many of the other films released on DVD have been treated the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars American disc
This is a review of the American disc, not the Optimum DVD which I haven't seen. The disc is obviously part of a Will Hay Collection which is now out of print. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars the goose steps out
A bit disappointing as some of the origonal film is clipped out compared to the VHS version which spoils the what would have been a very funny script

5.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed but still happy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Only part of actual film.
One of the major scenes in this film has been cut to almost nothing.
An incident that would have had 1940's film-goers crying with laughter has been totally removed. Read more
