Another bit of fabulousness from Eric Powell but you will need to have a decent grasp of Spanish (which I do not)

The Goon Vol: 13 14 Mar. 2015
By Alex O. Eschbach - Published on
Format: Paperback
It had been well over a year’s wait since the publication of the 12th Goon trade paperback. I wasn’t sure what caused the extended delay between the trades, I imagine a hiatus or perhaps work on the Kickstarter film, but I was more than happy to get my hands on the newest work by Eric Powell – The Goon in For Want of Whiskey and Blood.
This trade collects 3 single issues (#42-#44), The Goon: One for the Road, and all three parts of The Bog Lurk That Lurked Like a Thing! A Bad Thing!.
Each of the three single issues are self-contained Goon stories. The first chapter appears to be the only one that will apply to the overarching story of The Goon. It involves the Zombie Priest, various warnings for the Goon that try and kill him, and a boxing match. It definitely spells out an interesting future for the Goon.
The next issue featured art by Kyle Hotz that successfully captured the spirt of the world Eric Powell has created. The tale involved Halloween, the Ossified Baby of Nuremburg (it’s cursed, naturally), and an appearance from my favorite of Eric Powell’s creations – the ne’er do well orphans. This story finally gives fans something they’ve been wanting for years – The Goon and Franky battling a destructive baby.
The Goon and Franky are next seen trying to smuggle booze hidden in clocks into Mexico. Naturally, fan favorite, El Hombre Lagarto makes an appearance and terrorizes the town. The story is a fun mix of homages to Frankenstein and Dracula. The large majority of it is told in Spanish. This made it a fun puzzle to challenge what I’ve learned in three semesters of collegiate Spanish. I managed to decipher most of it and I’ve never claimed to be the best student.
Eric Powell’s next issue played as a love letter to Jack Davis (the trade even features a Goon illustration done by Davis). It features Franky and our hero taking a sailor all over town as he tries to find his fellow sailor friend who was last seen with a dame. The story blends classic Goon storytelling with a mix of what made Mad magazine so popular. In fact, this Goon trade features far more celebrity appearances than one would expect.
The last part of the trade paperback is a black and white Goon story written by Powell and illustrated by Mark Buckingham. Giant robots versus giant swamp like creatures. What’s not to love? Well, those damn sewer kids for one, always thievin’ keys. The story is broken into three short parts and makes for a quick and enjoyable read.
As always Powell’s artwork in The Goon is top notch. The perfect creature designs and old-timey world always makes each panel of The Goon something to appreciate. This trade also contains artwork from Eric Powell’s sketchbook. You get more than just the usual pre-finished sketches, he also includes a couple fun little comics he drew. The trade alone is worth purchasing just to see Powell’s take on how Bill Murray spent some of his time in Groundhog Day.
The volume appears like a mop-up of loose odds and ends 18 Dec. 2014

Well, this was a surprise. For the first time I actually felt that a Goon TPB wasn't worth five stars. The volume appears like a mop-up of loose odds and ends, and the material isn't as good as Powell's usual output. The art is perfect, but for some reason he feels the urge to write lenghty stories in Mexican, and the humor is completely lost on me. Still, Powell is better than anyone else.
Another great goon comic 4 Mar. 2015

Another great goon comic. Totally writing that on my own and not cause some guy is threatening me with a lead pipe...

Good read, though bit off putting at the mid chapter run, which looks amusing, but as its almost all in another language, i have no idea whats being said. Still i'd say get it.
