I first bought this as a spotty teenage goon fan in the late 1970s. It's still probably the best systematic guide to the show, carefully listing the shows by name, and providing the alternative names when they were not coherently announced. What I particularly enjoyed was his analysis of the characters - the tendency of them to pair up [with the notable exeception of Bloodnok] the decline of Moriarty as the shows progressed. He also gives due regard to the importance of Secombe/Seagoon in the mix - something ofen overlooked by fans. Wilmut writes well, if a little dryly at times. The book could have done with more anecdotes about the show - a lack which indicates an absence of input from the principal participants. It's now about 20 years since it was first published, and the book probably does need an update. But this is still the most essential guide to a show that revolutionised comedy.

This rather short book has not been updated since its' first publication in 1976, but there is probably not that much to add since it describes a radio show that was defunct in 1960. If you are already a fan of the unique, surreal and generally fantastic Goon Shows then you will probably find this book fairly interesting as a supporting volumne, since it gives an insider's view of how the show evolved and developed (the author worked with Goons creator Spike Milligan) and contains an exhaustive list of all the shows and some nice plot synopses too. However if you are new to the Goons or are wondering what all the fuss is about then you would be better off tracking down a couple of the best of the radio shows themselves: recommended listening perhaps "The Million Pound Penny" and "Child Harold Reward", both of which are easily available on CD.

Although published in 1977, this is still an essential, inexpensive, and eminently readable book for any lover of the Goon Shows of the 1950s. For me, the prime value is in the chronological listing of all the Goon Shows broadcast between 1951 and 1960 plus the repeat broadcasts and Transcription Services which, between them, extended well into the 1970s. Members of the Goon Show Preservation Society will be well aware of this book but for any others it will be an introduction into the background of probably the most influential radio comedy series of its era.
