Meet Mr Gary Sparrow, just an ordinary bloke with an extraordinary life; almost a devoted and attentive husband, and a sometimes loyal and dependable best friend. By day a very bored and uninspired TV repairman, and, by night, an accidental time traveller extraordinaire. Among the anonymous street of Whitechapel you will find a strange alley called Duckett s Passage. It looks to you and I like any other alleyway, but for Gary Sparrow it leads to a war torn London, to barrage balloons and the Blitz, and, in particular, to a little pub called The Royal Oak, to a lonely barmaid called Phoebe... 5.0 out of 5 stars It's about time! 6 July 2005
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I have been waiting a long time for this show to finally come out on DVD. Tired of waiting for several British shows to be released on DVD in the USA, I purchased an international, region free DVD player so I could purchase DVDs from the UK. So, my opinions might vary slightly from the majority of people here.
This has to be one of the all time funniest sit-coms in the history of television comedy - ever! Nicolas Lyndhurt is one of my favorite actors - I love everything he's ever done including "Only Fools and Horses" and "Piglet Files". (Don't laugh at me) "Goodnight Sweetheart" is so original in its format of Sci-Fi/Comedy. I know there is argument over the change of the actors playing Phoebe and Yvonne, however, after I got used to the new actors, I still loved the show. With all the crap that is on the air today from reality shows to that other dribble that comes out of Hollywood, even with the change of 2 key charachters, this show (seasons 4-6) is still far superior compared to what else is out there. Elizabeth Carling (the 2nd Phoebe) has the most incredible, beautiful singing voice. Very impressed by her talent, I recommend the soundtrack to this show if you can find it. Fresh format, excellent writing, brilliant acting "Goodnight Sweetheart" is a treat. I agree with the reviewer who suggests watching this on a rainy night with a roaring fire. Smart, Funny and Charming, this show is gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars finally! 27 Jun 2005
By D.A.C
Format:DVD
Goodnight Sweetheart.Yes it's that one about the bloke who time travels.thats how i remind everyone about it.It was my favourite show when i was a kid and probably my favourite show ever and now finally this first series from 1993 is finally out on DVD 6 years since the shows demise.Watching this again reminds me just how good the writing on the first 3 series was.Even if you only watch this first series its still worth giving it a go.The basic story is this;1990's Gary Sparrow finds he has wandered into 1940's britain during the war.Sounds an odd idea for a sitcom, but it worked so well it even survived the exit of two of its stars, and managed to get through 6 series ending on june 28 1999.Roll on the release of series 2.........

5.0 out of 5 stars Goodnight Sweetheart The Series. 25 Aug 2005
Format:DVD
What an absolute brilliant DVD the complete series one is.I like many others possess old VHS copies of Series One and Two and have waited and waited in vain for the series to be published onto DVD but at last Revelation have done it !. My only fear is that they dont just stop at series two.The quality of the DVD is excellent, true escapism.

Gary Sparrow is going about his everyday business as a tv repairman when he accidentally stumbles upon a strange alley Duckets Passage, as he goes dwon he passes through a hole in time and arrives in wartorn London. Going into The Royal Oak he thinks he has stumbled upon a theme pub specialising in the 2nd World War, it takes him some time to realise he is actually in the real thing. Fantastic sitcom with a difference starring Nick Lyndhurst.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART - SERIES ONE 10 Aug 2014
By bobmac
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Gary Sparrow is a somewhat disillusioned TV repairman, in a drab marriage with his ambitious wife Yvonne, and best friends with Ron, a printer whose marriage is on the brink of breakdown. While on a TV repair call-out in East London, Gary accidentally discovers a time portal which leads to war time London. There he meets Phoebe, a pretty barmaid who works in the Royal Oak pub, and Reg Deadman, a dim-witted but friendly policeman.

Gary strikes up a friendship with Phoebe, and makes repeated trips through the time portal, gradually establishing a second life for himself in the 1940s. In this life, he claims to be both a secret agent (aided by his knowledge of future wartime events) and a singer-songwriter, in fact passing off modern day pop songs as his own, particularly songs by The Beatles. He impresses Phoebe by bringing her goods which are widely available in the present day, but were rationed in wartime Britain, such as chocolate, bacon, and nylons and they begin a romance.

I love it, great comedy, great nostalgia, great acting, perfect mix of characters!

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming rom-com spanning 53 years 16 Jan 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Goodnight Sweetheart is a classic 90s series about a time-traveller in the modern era who finds a way back to the 1940s. Flitting between the eras, he finds new love in the 40s while his modern marriage founders.

I always loved the series when I was younger and now I'm working my way through the series season by season. And I don't regret a thing. It's a wonderful series with real character and class.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delightful First Series 22 Jun 2005
By E. A. Redfearn TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:DVD
When this series was first shown, no one could have forseen how successful it would become. I myself have found the whole series one of the funniest comedy series ever shown by BBC for many years, and I still find it so funny even after repeated viewings. I think this is because I always seem to find something new, perhaps a one liner, which I may have missed earlier.

That wonderful versatile actor Nicholas Lyndhurst plays Gary Sparrow, a bored television repair man married to Yvonne, (Michelle Holmes) an ambitious woman who has dreams of bettering herself. One day, whilst out on a repair job, he accidentally takes a short cut down Ducketts Passage and finds himself in what appeares to be a 1940s Theme Park area. Not realising he has actually travelled back in time to 1940, he finds himself in a local pub, The Royal Oak where he meets the lovely Phoebe (Dervla Kirwan).

From this point on, the comedy situations (some of which are absolutely hilarious) evolves around his relationship with Phoebe, the gormless Reg Dedman who is the local Constable(Christopher Ettridge, who is wonderful by the way) and his travels back and forth through time.

Supported by his close friend Ron(Victor McGuire) Gary struggles to keep his double life a secret from his wife Yvonne.

This delightful series will keep many viewers happy for hours. If you havent seen any episodes, and you like great comedy, you must buy this.

Supplemented by interviews with the series creators Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran. My only quibble is that there are no chapter markers which makes it awkward trying to find your favourite scenes.

Good picture and sound though.

I've watched the first four episodes and barely laughed. As a drama sitcom I suppose this is okay but it's not nearly as good as what I was expecting.
