Holiday camps declined with cheap overseas travel but remain with us, for some as they always were, for others a venue for specialist holiday weekends. The authors capture the memories of the glory years when holiday camps offered a promise of freedom, health, family fun and an enticing hint of romance. Dennis Hardy brings the story up to date.
About the Author
Colin Ward was the author of over thirty books on utopian history and unofficial uses of the countryside including Cotters and Squatters: housing's hidden history and, with David Crouch, The Allotment: its landscape and culture. Dennis Hardy is Emeritus Professor of Urban Planning at Middlesex University. Together with Colin Ward he has written Arcadia for All: the legacy of a makeshift landscape. His other books include Alternative Communities in Nineteenth Century England; Utopian England; and Poundbury, on the making of this model settlement.

The amount of,what must have been, painstaking research Mssrs.Hardy and Ward have without doubt lavished on this book cannot go without the highest praise. They tell the story from the first holiday camp pioneers , through the halceon days of Warner's, Butlins and Pontin's right up to the horrendous and ultimatley dissasterous corporate takeovers of the multinational conglommerates. From small plots of land with a few tents, through those Knights of the industry Sir Billy and Sir Fred's well designed wonderlands of holiday heaven, updating to the bottom-line led commercial treadmills they have become. The attention to detail, the factual accuracy and the historical photographic treasures unearthed by this dream team must be read and seen to be believed. It is indeed the absolute BIBLE for holiday camp fans, and a truly magical study of what in truth must be acknowleged as an important aspect of a particullarly British branch of social history.

The quality of this reworked book leaves a lot to be desired. The pictures, surely an important part of recording this type of history, are poor black and white(not even grey-scale) facsimiles. The captions thereon are also poor or non-existant. Many illustrations form the original work seem to have vanished.
