Format:VHS Tape
The premise for the show is simple. 4 talented middle-eastern actors making fun of themselves. There are many stereotypes for the general Indian populace of England, and when viewing a series like Goodness Gracious Me, you can see they poke fun at both sides. The truthful stereotypes, and the not so truthful ones, both in the same skit.
The show is extremely funny too. It kept me in stitches every week. It's been pretty topical, and while it's not for everyone (certain skits involving the 'Coopers' didn't go down to well with the Church of England), I feel that most people will find their own favourites in the show. Popular recurring characters include the Indian mother, who believes she can make anything you want for nothing (except a small aubergine), the 'Innit' kids, the wannabe-English 'Coopers' and the man who believes that every feat of human courage and achievement was fronted by an Indian. "Churchill was Indian."
I recommend this to comedy fans, particularly open minded ones at that. While some of the references will be lost on younger audiences as the series ages, I think you should pick up a comedy. You will laugh until it hurts.

A lot has been said about this series, some of it not very complimentary. A lot of Asians have said that this series is made for a "White" audience, but having been raised as a British born Asian I can relate to many of the skits such as the attempt to Anglicize my name, and the appalling behaviour of some people in Indian restaurants. Meera Syal is turning these images on their head, and I have to admit that I find "Goodness Gracious Me" one of the funniest comedy series on the telly and now you can have some of that rib-cracking fun on video as well! Meera Syal, and her gang of British born/raised Asians show in hilarious skits what it is like to live in Britain but always be brown and different. You get to meet the Kapoor's who like to be called Cooper because they are "BRITISH" and you also get a bevy of songs one of which coined that wonderful catchphrase, "Kiss my chuddies." This is a great series that everyone can enjoy no matter what colour, ethnic group or religion you are; so chill out, sit down and enjoy this great video, it's lots of fun, and who cares if it is not politically correct, what comedy series ever is?

Format:VHS Tape
I first became aware of 'Goodness Gracious Me' when it arrived on television in the UK - and it was excellent.
The comedy is pitched exactly right and is accessible to non asians (like myself) as well as asians (such as my better half). Occasionally a reference is used which goes over my head - but this is a rarity.
If you haven't experienced Goodness Gracious Me you have many delights to look forward to:
Skipinder, The Bush Kangeroo.
The Mahariji Yogi
The Rough guide to the UK (of course you haven't seen the *real* England until you've seen the villages - I went to a place called Guildford, and you'd think that they'd never seen a brown face before!)
The Kapoors... and so on.
My favourite? The man who claims everything is Indian.
The Royal Family? Indian!
All live in the same house? Indian! All work in the family business? Indian! Can't marry without parent's permission? Indian! All except Charles of course. He's African.
What? Why?
Have you seen those ears?
In short, Goodness Gracious Me is a delight.
Whilst I'm at it, I can also recommend the writings of Meera Syal - for example: 'Anita and Me'.

Excellent, a non stop riot!

Excellent, inspired!
