Amazon.co.uk Review

Named after Peter Sellers' cod-Indian novelty record of 1960, Goodness Gracious Me was a gamble for the commissioners at the BBC. Previous "ethnic minority" sketch shows such as The Real McCoy had achieved respectable audience figures, but had failed to make a convincing move into the mainstream. Realising that the new team had the potential to make the crossover, the powers-that-be decided to use radio as a testing ground for their material, with BBC Television funding a three-series run on Radio 4. The experiment was a success, and Goodness Gracious Me went on to achieve public and critical acclaim on both radio and television.

This release from the BBC Radio Collection includes highlights of the first series and three complete episodes from series two. It showcases the team at their best, making satirical sideswipes at the intersection of British and Asian cultures. A common tactic is the reversal of situations or stereotypes--diners "go for an English", requesting food which is "not too bland"; the Kapoor family (pronouncing their surname "Cooper") compete with their neighbours over how quintessentially English they can be; a Muslim boy converts to Judaism and instantly sounds like Woody Allen. This is a programme that transcends the notion of "ethnic comedy", with the broadcasting ghetto which that phrase suggests--beyond any racial considerations, it is simply very, very funny. --Running time approx 1 hour 40 minutes --John Oates --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Nothing escapes the satirical eye of Britain's phenomenally successful first all-Asian sketch show in this compilation of the best of the Sony-award winning BBC Radio 4 series.

GGM has quickly gained the respect and appeal of an entire population of Indians and non Indians alike. The group have the ability to satire almost flawlessly the culture that resides in Indian culture outside India, especially in England. With familiar characters like the Muffins and the Kapoors (pronounced Coopers), you will become an addict. The Muffins, a pair of Asian Brits whose culture is both cockney, Indian and black, are as endearing as Laurel and Hardy. They are 'Buggers', bunghis with black attitude. They sing, they laugh and they make fun of everything remotely 'asian' under the sun. Skits like the "Asian university", "Bharat Homes", and the father whose perspective sees everything as Indian. If you are a British born Asian you will not fail to laugh at them, with them and at yourself... Three cheers for GOODNESS GRATIOUS ME!!!

Hilarious CD. 2 Oct 2009
Format:Audio CD
You get the laughs all over again. You might have seen the show but the audio CD does capture the spirit extremely well. Sometimes brash, sometimes tongue in cheek but it is gauranteed to bring a smile.
