3.0 out of 5 stars Too many glitches, 8 April 2008
By J. Sweby (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I read all the industry reviews I could find for the GHD1621F2 before buying it and on the whole they were positive. The general consensus was that for £100, you can't get better than this on the market.

I agreed initialy and was delighted with my choice. So easy to set up and use that for the first time it wasn't just me in the house who could record things. The ability to find a program in the weekly guide and just press one button to record either that episode or the whole series is amazing. I don't know when many things are on any more, I just know it has been recorded and is there for me to watch at my convenience.

Everything it says it can do, it does, and does them well.

But it loses marks in a few areas and ultimately these should make you think about avoiding it.

1. It loses audio synch now and again if you use the programme guide. You only have to switch channels and back to restore normality but a glitch all the same. This was one problem I heard about time & again before buying.

2. It just doesn't handle the incoming signal very well. I had a Goodmans Freeview box before this and it never had a problem with my aerial Freeview, no blocking or anything. We had an aeriel installer around and he attached his £20 Freeview box with no problems either. Now, I can't get some of the Channel Five stations (no loss really) but all of the Channel 4 stations (C4, More 4, E4, Film4) are blocky and unwatchable. One magazine review I read quoted exactly the same problem with Channel 4 as well.

3. The LED display on the front has already lost some of the LEDs after only a few months.

4. The BBCi red button works the first time the machine is on, but once it has been in standby, interactive services no longer work. You can get the text but if it needs to switch to an interactive channel, it doesn't, it hangs.

After exactly 12 months and a week, this box became unusable because of the poor handling of the signal. I now have a TVonics Z250 and this, along with the other cheap Freeview boxes I tried, all have 100% signal strength (which is to expected as my rooftop aerial actually has line-of-sight with the TV transmitter).

1.0 out of 5 stars Had to send 2 back, 3 Jan 2009

Ive had two of these things now, both of them suffered with freezing up, the only way to solve this is to unplug it.
Both of them lost our saved programmes, and customer services were little help.
Avoid this rubbish at all costs

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value!!, 21 Aug 2008

I bought this box after returning a Thomson one - it is a much better box for only £10 more!! Easy to set up, easy to use, instructions are easy to understand! Can record 2 channels at once - but you can only watch either of the 2 channels, but if your recording one you can watch any other channel. Looks pretty good too!!!
