The Goodmans GDVD301R DVD recorder has an attractive slim-line design and features Videoplus technology. Videoplus allows you to enter a plus code into your recorder and it will convert this into a time and channel. When the recorder is supplied with a pluscode, it will automatically start the recording process at the designated time period. Pluscodes are usually printed in TV guides and programme listings in newspapers.

The GDVD301R recorder is ultra-flexible and plays DVD/ CD/ CDMP3/ Kodak picture CD. It also allows you to record from VHS, DVD, TV, satellite, MP3, CD or photo CD sources and also features a high tolerance to damaged/scratched discs. Five quality settings give up to 6 hours recording per disc (recorder is supplied with one disc).

The GDVD301R recorder makes viewing a pleasure with an array of clever features including: Chapter skip/ search & repeat, multi chapter/ track programmable, zoom and slow motion/step function, the ability to overwrite recordings without deleting an entire disc, a fully intelligent on-screen help and warning system, automatic on-screen disc information and contents indexing, a unique user friendly on-screen set-up system, direct access to the recording menu, direct access to the timer function and on-screen subtitle support.

    This being my first DVD recorder, I was probably too keen to overlook niggling problems to be affected by them at first. But now 4 months on, it's being returned and not coming back.

    I have no issue with picture quality from pre-recorded DVDs or those recorded on this machine, it's pretty good. BUT:

    Mine will not record reliably on good branded DVD+RW media, even Sony - it doesn't recognise big chunks of it's own recordings, sometimes trashing 20 minutes at random points!

    The remote control is a contemptible effort at best. Very cheap and nasty, pitifully short range - I had to be no more than 4 or 5ft away from the unit and pointing the remote EXACTLY at the sensor for it to work (even with new Duracell batteries, and everything wiped clean). I may as well have binned the remote and used the front panel buttons, how bad is that?!

    The menu system is awfully slow and tedious in parts, with some functions difficult to find. Oh, and the clock has to be manually set, and gains about a minute per week - quality!!

    Best avoided in my opinion.

    This unit is slightly old fashioned looking but acceptable for a bedroom. It sets up OK and the recordings are fine BUT it has serious compatability issues with DVD's recorded on other machines. As a stand alone this would not be a problem but for people who have two or more units in their household (of different makes), swapping dvd's around would become an issue. I have read many articles on this issue and e-mailed Goodmans but they have not replied.I have returned my unit & wouldnt buy another. Liteon 5002/6 seem to be the best similar DVD recorders.

    Having bought this DVD recorder over other brands due to the good name of Goodmans, I have been sorely disappointed. Set up was a nightmare trying to get a clear picture from my freeview box without interference. In the end I had to route the signal through my VCR and into the DVD Recorder.

    Like others before, I found that this ran very hot, even when not being used.

    It ruined discs (even rewriteables!), refused to read discs it had just recorded. Final crunch came when it refused to read any disc but a pre-recorded disc. That was when it went back to the store who were good enough to give me a full refund.

    Frustrating to say the least! A shame really, since up to now I had always had a good experience with Goodman products. I am wary now of buying any.
