I have both this PVR and the similar Humax Foxsat-HDR. Based on these Amazon reviews, the Humax seems to be more popular, but I think the Goodmans is much better.

To me the picture quality is the most important feature, and the picture upscaler in the Goodmans is vastly superior to the Humax. The quality of the up-scaled SD channels is stunning and close to the quality of HD channels from a short distance away from the TV. The Humax is blockier and more pixelated, and doesnt handle movement nearly as well. I dont like to use the Humax any more as the picture quality is very noticeably worse.

One downside to the Goodmans is that the fan can be quite noisy, especially after the box has been on for a while. When you put the box in standby mode the fan continues to spin for a couple of minutes to cool down the hard disk before it powers off. I thought I had a faulty box because the fan was so loud, but you dont notice it at all when the TV is on, only when its shutting down. It would probably be quite easy to open the box up and replace the fan with a quieter one and I'll probably do this when the warranty has expired. At the same time I will probably fit a larger hard disk, as its possible to do this.

In my opinion this is the best freesat-HD PVR you can get for the money, I would say that is better than the Humax because of the picture quality, otherwise they're both quite similar.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
There really isnt much to choose from if your looking for Freesat+ boxes. If you have the money Panasonic do very good box combined with a blu-ray recorder/player but it is very expensive.

In this price bracket the competition is really with the probably more popular Humax box, which itself is far from perfect and has many niggling faults and omissions.

In many respects this is very similar - it is far from perfect but it does the job. The remote is much better set out than the Humax and doesn't appear to suffer the very annoying delays after pressing buttons for anything to happen - take note Humax.

It is however rather noisy - more so than the Humax and I did find this difficult to get used to.

Overall you will probably be happy with this unit, just don't expect it to be perfect and bug free - non of them are.

I decided to get a new freesat HD digital TV recorder as I already had a Goodmans 80G terrestrial recorder and I found it reliable and easy to use. So I looked at the reviews for the Goodmans GFSDTR500HD Freesat recorders and I was suprised to see that the Humax Foxsat 320GB freesat + HD recorder came out best in comparison so I decided as they say its the best one to have I will get one. ( Big Mistake ) I could not get on with the remote control at all I was also having messages telling me that there is a problem and it could not do something but it did not say what it wanted to do. Then finally it just froze and I could not do anything with it at all even after unpluging it for a time it would not respond so I took it back where I got it from and asked them to swap it for a Goodmans 500HD but they would not so I asked for my money back and orderd one from Amazon and it arrived the next day all that I can say is it is much better in every way than the Humex one the remote controle is smaller and laid out much better I would Recomend it to anyone and the fan is not realy a problem I can hardly hear it at all.

P/S look up on the net Humex recorders freezing all the time they do not tell you about that just the good bits.
