I couldn't put this book down. Such a touching and inspiring account. Love the contrast between the two sistes' experiences. I laughed, smiled and cried with them.

I cried reading the first page and I cried reading the last few chapters. I just could not put this book down. A true story written by 2 sisters living through the Bosnian War, it made me laugh and it certainly made me cry and as someone who knew little about this terrible war, I learnt a lot. It's beautifully written and I'm glad to know this family who suffered so much are all still alive and well today. A must read.

Illuminating story 31 Mar 2012
Format:Hardcover
I read this book on the advice of my daughter in law who lives in New Zealand where understandably it is very popular. A bit of a slow start with quite laborious child like writing I soon got immersed in the story of separation & hardship.
Considering the war in the former Yugoslavia was as recent as the 1990's it brings home to my generation, which thinks war is a thing that happened years ago, the horrors of conflict & disaster that is brought to ordinary families.
All the hardships this family suffered only brought them closer together & they were very fortunate to be allowed to settle in New Zealand, all fourteen of them !
An enjoyable book which gets better as you progress.
