Product Description

CD Description

Alex Skolnick is a world renowned guitarist. His career has seen him tour the globe as a member of rock legends Testament and Savatage onto Trans Siberrian Orchestra and finally as a (brief) member of Ozzy Osbourne's band. Since hanging up his 'rock' hat, Alex has put together a stunning jazz trio, and on this, their first album, he pays tribute to his roots, whilst embracing his new direction. The album contains fresh interpretations of rock standards such as ''Detroit Rock City' (Kiss), 'Crazy Train' (Ozzy), 'No One Like You' (Scorpions) and 'War Pigs' (Black Sabbath).

Alex Skolnick was lead guitarist with heavy metal band Testament before discovering Miles Davis and going back to college to study jazz and composition. His playing on this album is really excellent - very smooth and lyrical in places, completing rawk-ing out in others. The trio are very tight, with some excellent drumming and bass work. The feel of this album is most definitely straight-out jazz, it just that the tunes are from 80's and 90's heavy metal. This isn't some kind of novelty, cross-over act, this is the real thing.

If you're interested in this, you should also check out Alex's latest album Transformation. Other work worth checking out is the Attention Deficit CD's with Alex Skolnick, bass supremo Michael Manring and Tim Alexander, drummer from Primus.

Almost two decades ago I ranked Alex Skolnick in the top 5 guitarists of his generation (yes he really was that damn good, not that you'd be able to tell from what he's releasing these days!) and I personally find it a great shame that, for whatever reason, he's been reduced to releasing drivel like this.

I am genuinely and deeply saddened by this happening.
