Go on Sam. My big fat folk gypsy recording. Soulful and so unusual. A great reinterpretation of a lost gem.

Sam Lee does not have an especially technically skilled or beautiful voice, but that really doesn't matter - this is a collection of songs that have persisted within the oral tradition because they are simply wonderful songs. And for that reason there is arguably great value in skilled musicians directing their creative energies towards and arranging them, so that a new audience can enjoy them. The only songs familiar to me was My Ausheen, but the themes and words, and perhaps variations of these very songs, will be familiar to anyone who has listened to folk songs before - betrayal, desire, longing, absence, heartbreak. The musical accompaniment it largely acoustic, but very effective at creating the right mood for the songs , particularly the use of a mouth harp or komuz, and some very plaintive trumpet. Sam Lee's own vocal performance is competent, and arguably more appropriate for these songs than a more bravura delivery, which allows you to concentrate on the songs. And the songs are very powerful indeed - almost agonizingly so at times. If you are feeling low, beware of listening to this after a few drinks because it could bring tears to your eyes.
