Review

'Here is the triumphant proof that a little book can be a great book. Mr. Chips deserves a place in the gallery of English characters. Never have I known more beautifully rendered a man at peace with life, a finer setting forth of what happy dreams may come when you are old and grey and full of sleep. (Howard Spring, The Evening Standard )

'One lays down the book with the satisfaction that comes from contemplation of a piece of work supremely well done. This is too good a book to be borrowed . . . it should be bought' (Punch )

I have read this book again and again over the past forty years, and have never failed to be enchanted by the heart-warming story of the retired schoolmaster. His reminiscences, of hope and aspirations, of courage and determination, of joy and tragedy, and laughter...always laughter...are shared with us, written in the most beautiful prose. When one puts the book down...and that in itself it quite difficult to do!...it is with a sense of wonder. How can a such a small volume convey so much...A biography of a long, incident-packed life and the reader...Well, this reader, at least... has been privy to all of it. I'll read it again and again. I'll never say goodbye to Mr Chips!

Have read this several times and seen the film based on it more than once. What can I say except that it is a great book? It keeps you interested, makes you very sad, but shining through it all is the theme that Mr. Chips' life was fully justified by the love and respect he received from his peers and the boys he taught.

I recommend that you read it and judge for yourself, you won't be disappointed. I can say the same about Random Harvest too!

The film of this book is one of my all-time favourites which made me hesitate a little before reading this book. Felt the same about Random Harvest. Well with both books there was absolutely no disappointment. This is a wonderful book that takes you back in time to a different world that is disappearing. One reviewer has noted that details concerning the school weren't that good. Get a life. There are people who have to find 'something'. I 100% recommend this beautiful book.

Mr. Chips Stays
My first introduction to this story was through the 1960's movie with Peter O'Toole playing Mr. Chips. I loved the movie as a kid but the 1933 novelette was less impressive. Read more

Goodbye Mr Chips
This book is not nearly as long as you expect it to be if you have ever seen the film and television interpretations. However, it is an easy and most enjoyable read.

The story, is in the style of an 'old world' teacher, in his 80's in 1933, spends his time thinking of his career, life et al. Read more

not the same as the films
I think I expected it to be the same as the films that have been made of this book, but this was not the case. The films are very good, but so is the book, but in a different way. Read more

If brevity were the soul of wit
Having enjoyed the film(s) for decades, I thought it high time to go to the original source. I marvelled at how much can be condensed into and conveyed by so few words, the economy... Read more

An Institution within an Institution
It's a rare thing that the movie is better than its source material, but I think (at least for American audiences) that this is true for this novelette. Read more
