This is a great album, from the cover to the contents (although to appreciate the cover the vinyl version was far better). Hearing the album is due for a re-release I have been playing it to death recently.
Karl Wallinger had left the Waterboys and established his own group, World Party. Have already released the excellent
Private Revolution (also due a re-release at the same time), this was his second offering from the "new" group. And what an offering. A mixture of world music (think Talking Head era Naked) with some gorgeous pop melodies, particularly in "Put the Message in the Box". Its an album which is difficult to pigeon hole in terms of style, due to the sheer eclecticism of the contents (at times the Beatles meet the Stones meeting Motown meeting African tribes.....).
Wallinger has managed to make an album which not only appears timeless in terms of the music, but also included subjects which were important at the time; "Is it Too Late" ponders whether it is too late to save the planet - a subject which was relevant at the time of release, and even more so now.
To me, this was World Party's zenith - the aforementioned Private Revolution was good and contained the classic "Ship of Fools" which gave an indication of the environmental campaigner within Wallinger ("save me from tomorrow....I don't want to sail this ship of fools"),
Bang! continued this theme, whilst
Egyptology was a bit of a let down, although contains "She's the One" (the cover of which was later to be made famous by Robbie Williams), although their final offering
Dumbing Up got close to Goodbye Jumbo for state of the planet message, albeit portrayed in a more "poppy" manner.
An album that should grace the selves of anyone series about their AOR.
