In his new book, GOODBYE, FRIEND, Gary Kowalski writes about the connection people feel for their animal companions and the depth of the loss often experienced when these friends die. His voice is authoritative, spiritual, and calming. Like his 1991 book, THE SOULS OF ANIMALS, this book celebrates our profound and humbling kinship with our fellow creatures.

The book covers subjects like talking to children about death, the healing power of nature and creating ceremonies to honor a dead pet. The author, who was facing the prospect of losing his own dog, Chinook, when he wrote this book, shares some beautiful reflections on birth and death and the continuum of life. His love for his own dog, his wisdom about animals, and his gentle, reflective spirit have combined to create a poignant and wonderful book

I read this book a few months ago after I had to put my pal Puddin Head to sleep after 11 wonderful years. This book gave me the most comfort and relief of the four I read. In fact, the reason I am here is to order another copy for my best friend who is facing this ordeal today.

Have read better 4 May 2009
Format:Paperback
When I recently lost my treasured pet dog and ordered some books on pet loss to help me overcome my grief.
I didnt find this book particularly helpful as it made continual references to God as the author is a Reverend. Too spiritual for my liking.

While it will not happen instantly or immediately, the sadness we feel from losing a pet can gradually diminish while warm and funny memories remain and grow richer in our minds. We recall good times we shared. Eventually, we can look back calmly on the years gone by-never without a tinge of sorrow, but with a powerful feeling of gratitude for a wonderful friendship. We know how blessed we have been to love and be loved, even if only for a short interlude. "e;

From out of the infinite realm of possibility, a never-to-be repeated creature comes into being, looks out briefly on the universe, passes its life force along to coming generations, then rejoins the undifferentiated vastness from which it emerged. "e;

"Until one has loved an animal," wrote Anatole France, "a part of one's soul remains unawakened" Almost anyone who has ever let an animal under his or her skin will agree that for all the aggravations and heartaches that come with having a pet, the return in love, affection, and memory can make it all worthwhile. "e;
