Thoroughly enjoyed the book. It exceeded my expectations. The first time, in a long time, that I found difficulty in putting the book down.

Life in Nazi Germany 30 Dec 2012
By H. Ashenden - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Although this is a fairly slim volume, it nevertheless is an early work from one of the better English writers of the 20th Century. Beautifully written, it tells of his life in Berlin prior to the second world war, and at a time when he was always short of money. He then earned his living teaching English to Berliners. The book touches on the rise of Hitler's Nazi party and the abominable treatment of the Jews by the German people. Isherwood's command of language is only partly the reason why I recommend this fascinating book of experiences to lovers of quality writing, it is also an interesting slice of life from a time when human behaviour was at its worst. The book incidentally, formed the basis of the Broadway show 'Cabaret' which was later turned into a film.

Superb 11 July 2013

What can one say about this book, if you have ever seen Cabaret then you need to read the inspiration for the movie. This is definately a portrayal of a period of time in one man's life. I think it provides a background for the movie and just provides a richer understanding of the story.

I just love Christopher Isherwood. This is one of his better books and I truly enjoyed reading it. I love anything about Berlin.

Wonderful introduction to Christopher Isherwood! 4 April 2013
By Cesar - Published on Amazon.com

Although I was already somewhat familiar with the life of Christopher Isherwood, I had never read any of his work. But after randomly seeing a university production of Cabaret, it piqued my interest to finally explore the source and I was pleasantly surprised to find such an enjoyable and well-written piece of work. Not only are the episodic stories told beautifully, but I was really moved by Mr. Isherwood's diary-like approach. I felt transported to a very real Weimar Germany, a period I personally find to be the most interesting of modern German history. I'm now very curious to read Mr. Norris Changes Trains and A Single Man. Thanks Herr Issyvoo!

Excellent! 21 Feb 2013
By Brigitte Cummings - Published on Amazon.com

A book which is hard to put down! excellent portrayal of a difficult situation and eye opening to what really was happening during those early years before the war, seen through the eyes of a very keen observer with a dry sense of humor and a very observant and open minded view!
