A pleasant and varied CD,

This review is from: Goodall: Choral Works (Audio CD)
This CD features a range of choral music written by renowned TV composer Howard Goodall. Some of the tracks will be familar to TV viewers as the themes of comedy programmes (Mr Bean & the Vicar of Dibley), but the music is well worth taking seriously.Goodalls Requiem mass is also featured. The average Brit would probably be surprised at how many Goodall tunes he or she knows: these excellent recordings from the much under-rated ASV label demonstrate why his music is so widely used.

Howard Goodall might very well enter the psyche of anyone with an ear for extremely subtle harmonies. English church choirs are to me (a German listener) the most wonderful and expressive in the world. Howard Goodall makes perfectuse of them. His compositions are reminiscent of Gregorian chants and Palestrina with a British church choir music twist. The atmosphere is not quite as pastoral as the aforementioned chants, but more current and modern. However, Goodall's compositions do not copy ancient works, but bear his own stamp. Most listeners will know the themes of "Mr. Bean" and "The Vicar of Dibley" - and yet, some of the other pieces are even more subtle. The 2 TV themes are released here for the first time in perfect sound quality - an added plus to me.Supple the CD is, too, because the sound is absolutely marvellous. Full and rich - not like many other CDs containing choral works, which are often thin and lacking in depth and brilliance. All non-English-speaking listeners are supplied with a booklet written in English, French and German. If you want an ultimate package of wonderful modern choir music, this is the one to get!

A superb CD - inspired,

I have to admit I'd never heard of Howard Goodall before searching on Amazon. I'm a fan of choral music, and for a long time I've had "find Mr. Bean music" on my to-do list.I was surprised to learn it was by a contemporary composer, and ordered the CD. It's quite a revelation; each piece is thoughtful, deep, and quietly masterful. I love choral, but I prefer Renaissance to contemporary. In just 24 hours, however, this recording has changed all that; a beautiful collection of pieces - I'd put this album right at the top of my favourites list. So far my favourite is 'Palm 23' - I've never actually watched 'The Vicar of Dibley', so I don't to have to disassociate the music from a TV show. It's sublime, sheer comfort; a real indulgence, but I've played it about 15 times! The CD is worth it for that track alone. Like the other reviewers, I'm enjoying the other tracks more and more with each playing. I very highly recommend this CD - it's well worth the wait.
