“One of the most important books ever written about the practice and the principles of journalism, and possibly the single best book ever written about a particular episode in the history of a newspaper”

Literary Review

“Brilliantly written…Compulsory reading for all who wish to estimate the strength of the foundations of British democracy”

Lord McGregor, Times Literary Supplement

“Much has been written about Rupert Murdoch by journalists peering in from the outside…Good Times, Bad Times is by a journalist who was engaged with Murdoch in a struggle to the death”

The New Republic

Product Description

The New York Times bestseller reveals the toxic corperate environment that lead to Murdoch's downfall with an updated preface on the phone-hacking scandal.

Sir Harold Evans was the editor of The Sunday Times for fourteen years from 1967, and the editor of the The Times from 1981 until 1982. His sensational resignation only a year after Rupert Murdoch promised to honour the commitments to editorial independence without which he would not have been allowed to acquire the titles is explained in this classic account of his battle for editorial independence. Good Times, Bad Times exposes the calculated way in which Murdoch operates: breaking promises with abandon and manoeuvring through the law and government to get what he wants.

An immediate and critically acclaimed No.1 bestseller when it was first published in 1983, Good Times, Bad Times provides an invaluable insight into the earlier days of the Murdoch empire with eerie echoes of the corporate culture that incubated the phone-hacking scandals. It is not only an exciting and informative socio-historical read, but also - through its examination of the relationship of politicians and the media - a relevant lesson for today and warning for the future.

Excellent 17 Oct 2011
This book is excellent, and beautifully written. Sir Harold Evans provides us with a fascinating insight into life in Times Newspapers in the 70s and early 80s, which was a tumultuous period in its history, and in the history of newspapers in Britain. The central figure is of course Rupert Murdoch, and Evans' portrait of him is illuminating and quite sinister. For anyone with an interest in journalism, media ownership, Murdoch and early 80s British politics this is a must-read. There are a few typos in this 2011 reprint but they do not detract from the flow or pace of the book.

A compelling, fascinating and very well-written book, as one would expect from Harold Evans. Unfortunately however it is completely spoilt by the huge number of typos in the text, hence just two stars. It's a pity because a writer of Evans' standing should not have been let down by sloppy proof-reading.

Good times bad times 16 Dec 2011
By harriet
I found this book very interesting and well written. I learnt lots about the newspaper world albeit from 1983.
The mistakes in the text were very annoying. I have never seen so many in one book and quite enough to make it uncomfortable so I recommend reading another edition and there are plenty to chose from.
