Biography

John Fahey (February 28, 1939 – February 22, 2001) was an American fingerstyle guitarist and composer who pioneered the steel-string acoustic guitar as a solo instrument. Fahey at the peak of his powers revisits some of his favourite themes from his first golden decade, twisting and winding them into long mesmerising medleys. Very beautiful. Then because there are always surprises on a Fahey record, we get "Sandy on Earth" which is a complete departure, utterly different from anything else he ever did, with flamenco flourishes and many intricate sections, hook lines, riffs and melodies all jammed together in 20 minutes of complete incoherence - a stone masterpiece. With Merle Travis' version of "I'll See You in my Dreams" tacked on to send us off with a smile. But we were smiling already.

Solo steel string open tuned American primitive guitar perfection.

I've been listening to this record for a few weeks now, and although it was one the last John Fahey albums I got round to buying it does sound like it would be a superb introduction for anyone not familiar with the man's work.

Released on Shanachie in 1989, but possibly recorded a year or two earlier, here John has re-recorded many of his earlier works, adding on a new 16 minute piece, the medley "Sandy On Earth" / "I'll See You In My Dreams", just to tempt collectors no doubt!

*Warning*
If you buy this record be prepared to get sucked into the wonderful addiction of wanting to check out all the other remarkable John Fahey records.

Fahey at his strongest 10 Mar. 2001
By Bigthumb - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This late-1980s recording for Shanachie's Guitar Artistry series features Fahey working out on themes that mostly will be familiar to fans. But what makes this disc a great addition to any Fahey collection - and a great intro disc for those who are not familiar with him - is the exceptional quality of both his playing and the recorded sound. His chops are as clean and powerful as you'll hear on any of his records this side of "Yellow Princess," and the engineering is so clear and up-close you could swear he's sitting in your living room.
The last track, a 16-minute sweep through many picking styles, called "Sandy on Earth" (concluding with a string-ripping version of "I'll See You in My Dreams") approaches the symphonic in its majesty and impact, and is apt to leave you drained and awestruck, as great musical art can do.
My advice: Play it proud and turn it up loud.

So achingly beautiful.I've listened to it well over a thousand times. The added bonus is you can send away for the tab to two of the songs if you are interested in trying to play the music. This was my first Fahey album.I dont know of a better way to jump into his world. Long live Big John!

God bless John Fahey 19 Nov. 2010

Hello all. This is the first time that I've ever written a review on Amazon.com. I've benefited from countless other reviews here, so I'm probably over-due. Well the fact that only two people had written reviews on this album put a burr under my saddle to write this review.

I have a few other Fahey albums/CD's, including Blid Joe Death, Best of 59-77, and the must have Fahey/Kottke/Lang. God, Time, and Causality is EASILY my favorite collection of John Fahey music. I bought this on a whim in a record shop some time ago. It is such a gem. As one of the other reviewers wrote, the themes are very familiar to Fahey listeners, but you can hear the maturity in the delivery and the phrasing. There is no indulgence in this playing on these recordings. He delivers the songs as if each song had written itself. No human intrusion. Just the music.

God bless John Fahey's soul for his suffering that must have been endured in order to hone his art to deliver us these sublime recordings. I am very grateful. We all should be.
