5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to studying. 7 Feb 2003
I bought this book when I returned to college to do A- levels and now that I'm in university I still use it. Many tutors recommend it and so would I.
Extremely useful if you are on a Open University course, other undergraduate course at university or just doing A-levels. One of the great things about the book is it easy readability, reassuring the reader that returning to study or studying for the first time is a skill that at first seems daunting but can be easily learn't through practice and not to get angry or disheartened if your work is criticised this is part of the learning process. Excellent for the Social Sciences.

By Frank Carver VINE VOICE
A solid and competent book to help anyone unsure about how to study, or what might be expected of them, for a serious academic qualification. Standard issue for a lot of Open University courses, this is just as useful for any university or college course where students are expected to do their own reading, research, and private study. Essential wisdom on time-management and note-taking leads into detailed coverage of how to research and produce written work (including sections on using numbers, statistics and graphs/charts). If you are taking your first steps into higher education, or you think your study and writing skills might be a bit rusty, this book could be an enormous help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teach your children well... 31 May 2008
I used this book years ago and found it extremely helpful. Now, as my second child is about to embark on a college career, where else should I advise her to turn but to this admirable little text.

Of course, the book is a little outdated but the principles hold good. Despite the modern trends in education, and particularly at the college level, little within the book has diminished in relevance.

Northedge is especially good at providing succinct direction in clear and lucid language, hardly surprising as the target audience is the adult learner who has been away from school or study for a number of years. In fact, I would consider this to be a major selling point and the continued success of the Open University in Great Britain is a testament to the work that has gone into this student manual.

I would highly recommend this book to students of all ages in preparation for the voyage of discovery that is higher education.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is outstanding 28 Jun 2009
This title was recommended while I was studying an O.U. psychology course. I subsequently have used it throughout an MSc Psychology, and I would largely credit this book for having attained a distinction. It removes the panic from studying & reading if you are on a very demanding course. You may think you have no time to read study guides, but I had 30+ hrs of course reading alone every week. The book is very accessible, and can be dipped into for tips, although you cannot help but read it from cover to really is that engaging, that you can't put it down!

This is an excellent book for new or experienced students in Social Sciences courses. Although it is suitable for students at traditional universities and colleges, it is particularly well suited to Open University and other distance learning students. For example, it has a chapter on "Learning from TV and Radio Broadcasts" as well as advice on taking notes in lectures. I have had mine for five years now, and the sections on essay writing and preparing for exams are particularly well-thumbed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best 30 Mar 2009
I have been working in education at college and university level for 30 years and I would say that without a doubt, this is the best study guide I have come across. It is thorough and very well thought out. It is also very interestingly written. Study guides tend to be a bit worthy but boring but this one is actually quite engaging to read. If all secondary and above students read this book it would be most beneficial for all concerned i.e. the students and their teachers.

I've just returned to studying with the OU after a break from education of nearly 15 years. This book gave me the confidence to return to study by providing clear advice and the necessary skills to get the most from my study materials. The book is organised into logical sections and has plenty of examples and activities.

The sections on reading and note taking are especially useful for OU courses where most of the study packs are written materials. The book also provided useful information for getting the most out of lectures & tutorials as well as a section on researching information online. Producing written assignments, presentations & examinations are all covered. Essay writing is covered in depth with things such as the nature of academic discourse, what makes a good essay and strategies for working through the process of essay writing from beginning to end.

The book focuses on becoming a better student by constantly adapting your skills to suit your strengths and developing strategies to get the most out of studying. I found it invaluable for helping me to read more critically and produce more focused notes which in turn has helped me to produce written assignments with less stress & panic.

The Good Study Guide

This book is brilliant! It's a must have for my course,so i bought it right away. I saw the size and thought Oh My God..i'm never going to get through it. But once I started it,I couldn't put it down. My kids had to get used to mummy having a couple of hours quiet time in the afternoon. It teaches you how to think positvly about studying, and how to manage time. I've not finished it yet,but I would recommend this to everyone. It's well written, well presented and a must have for all students !!!!
