Format: Audio CD
Founded by hustler Hy Weiss in 1952, Old Town Records is possibly most noted among fans or its doo wop output. No surprise then, there's a lot of that on offer over these 60 tracks. The Tremaines, Solitaires, Five Crowns (later, add Ben E King, that's a whole new story), Valentines, Gwen Edwards & Co'eds, Fi-Tones, Royaltones, Capris, Fiestas, Cleftones, Keytones, all eminently listenable, uptempo and otherwise. The Rogues start off well enough with "It's True", descending into a white-sounding, square, old school harmony group.

Plenty of r&b content, half pace "Good Rockin' Tonight" would've sounded better without the girlie chorus. Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee have four, all the better for the addition of small combo backing, Ursula Reed well worth a listen, as is Ruth McFadden (backed by The Supremes, Harptones and Royaltones). Pianist Bob Gaddy is solid, if a little derivative, Preston Brown stroll thru a nice organ, guitar and sax instro. Billy Bland is far from, great voice, whereas Gene Kennedy offers good enough teen pop and Larry Finnegan is more or less pure pop. Oddballs would include Vinny Lee & The Riders, throwaway instro workout on "Mule Train Rock", and Lou Dee & The Valley Boys get country with a hint of rockabilly. Mustn't forget The Fairfield Four, gospel, tremendous vocal workout on "Don't Let Nobody Turn You Around".

This works well as a sampler for the Old Town catalogue, much enjoyed. Of course, if you've got the five volumes of Old Town Doo Wop on Ace, they'll take a little shine off it.
