2.0 out of 5 stars Lots of sensible advice - BUT.... mine is a dissenting voice!, 22 Oct 2008
By F. J. Murphy - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this after reading all the rave reviews from other readers. Yes, it has a lot of sensible advice, BUT I found the so-called "positive" methods were deeply rooted in yank and shove methods that have now been superceded by better training approaches. The acknowledged debt to Barbara Woodhouse rang some warning bells for me - the descriptions and photos of lead corrections, and the use of "training collars" rang even more. I started out training dogs in this way many years ago - then I discovered clicker training and positive reinforcement, and find them easier, quicker and happier ways to a well behaved companion. I find the books of Jean Donaldson, Ian Dunbar and Karen Pryor more informative, more sympathetic, and more useful than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" FOR DOG OWNERS, 11 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I have learned an incredible amount from this book! With a very self-assured Shih Tzu puppy, you have to be able to think on your feet! I borrowed this book from the library and after only a few days, my little dust mop is behaving so much better and, I believe, feeling more secure about her place in our "pack". I am ordering the book today because, otherwise, the public library would be missing a dog/human training book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Great Trainer!, 8 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I'm a Veterinary Technician, thus get many questions about puppy training and see a number of behavioral "problems waiting to happen". Brian's book and The Art of Raising a Puppy by The Monks of New Skete are the top two books I recommend owners to read. Both books are quick reads -- filled with easy-to-apply positive reinforcement training techniques and give the "whys" behind the behavior.

I've seen Brian in action -- he's a high-energy trainer and an entertaining speaker. Within two minutes, he had a 6-month old puppy he'd never seen before following him on leash, watching his every move, and obeying commands in a heartbeat, all done with positive reinforcement. This dog barely followed his owner and would not obey commands until told 3-4 times. I walked away from his seminar with a lot of practical information I could reapply at the vet clinic and at home.
