I, like most who've read The Good Mayor, made the initial mistake of thinking that this was going to be just another mushy, sickly sweet, over-the-top romance novel: Boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, something gets in their way, boy finally gets girl...that kind of thing.
However, Nicoll adds a refreshingly wonderful depth to the done-to-death genre, exploring the complexities of the human condition, and nailing it to the point where the reader's empathy (and on occasion, irritation) with good ol' Tibo is effortless from the off.
In all honesty, I thought I would struggle through the reading of The Good Mayor, but I found myself purposely having to slow myself down as I got into the story - I didn't want it to end!
When all that seems to sell these days are crime stories and Harry Potter books, Nicoll has come up trumps with a story that has absolutely no problems in engaging its reader from beginning to end.
I have no hesitation in stamping this one a "must read" - especially if you like reading about the ins and outs of love and the complexity of the sometimes fragile human mind. Nicoll gets it spot on, and entertainingly spot on at that.

First off all I have to admit that my usual reading matter is murder, thriller and legal type books. So it was with a little concern that I sat down to this book....will I finish it?....could I finish it?

No problems, I was hooked from the very first chapter, when YOU have to make the decisions as to what year it is set, all through the book I was changing the year, there were little clues...clothes, transport, attiudes, they all played a part letting me decide when it was set. The gradual build up to the romance that HAS to happen, every page, will they, wont they? Another chapter and still we wait. Then suddenly, - Mr Nicoll adds a sudden twist, something we never expected. How could he!

This was a very differnt style of book for me to read, I would highly recomend it to anyone. It is coming back into my mind, I am thinking again about situations, I HAVE to go back and re-read some parts again.

The writing style, is very descriptive...could it be made into a 'talking book'? I think so. Close your eyes and you are there. Well done Andrew Nicoll. I await your next contribution.

This is such a beautiful story, told using wonderful language. The pace and way the story unfold is compelling. It is romantic but not slushy. It creates a real sense of magic and wonder. Think Amelie and you will not be far wrong. Totally recommend it.
