Sadly the film lacks most of the charm of the book. This is all the more surprising as the screenplay was also written by William Boyd. Early-on it feels like the film may have potential from some amusing moments and a strong cast, but ultimately the film just doesn't deliver. In fact it periodically descends to the level of farce most associated with carry-on films. Sean Connery turns-in the best performance, but his talent is just not supported by the rest of the cast or the script. John Lithgow is quite amateurish in comparison and Colin Friels seems to struggle between comedy and drama and consequently is not convincing with either. The rest of the cast - Diana Rigg, Joanna Whaley-Kilmer, Louis Gossett Jr. et al - just supply secondary characters which are never developed. Altogether I found this to be a genuinely disappointing film, but I can certainly recommend the book!

A good man in Africa 9 April 2011
Format:DVD
I cannot remember how many many years ago I first read the book. In those days I was regularly visiting West African countries and it was very true based on Boyd's personal experience. For people who do not understand W. African culture and way of life this DVD really brings it out and will start to help anyone who is thinking of going to this fascinating part of the world.

Wonderful 16 Dec 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This is a smart and funny movie, with a wonderful lead performance by Bruce Beresford, who I've never seen act anywhere else. This movie got trashed in almost every review I've come across, except "Playboy Magazine" who gave the movie a rave review. I have to say, I think "Playboy" was right, and all the other reviewers were wrong. I lived in Africa for a year when I was a boy, and this movie captures what it is like to live in Africa; I felt like I was in a time machine, taking me back to my Africa days. Sean Connery's part is small, but he is first-rate, as always. This movie is an over-looked gem.

Good humour 26 Jun 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This was a good comedy that I enjoyed. If you have lived in a developing country it is funny. I enjoyed the silly oversexed diplomat (who wasn't far off the mark of some single diplomats around the world), the ambassador, who was really hilarious and the myths the Africans believed. It is all good light hearted humour.

Very Enjoyable 17 Sep 2008

This was a great film to watch. The acting was excellent all the way through the film. Diana Rigg and Sean Connery in the same film is a can't miss and Colin Friels was their equal, every performance from all the actors was just fantastic. I wish this was on DVD.
