Thanks to Good Housekeeping, my cooking has improved tremendously, it turns out perfect every time.
I've had this book 15 years and I still use it regularly. Almost everything in the book is easy to make with ingredients that are easily available from most supermarkets around the world. Instructions are straightforward with colour pictures along the way in case you're not sure. The colour index at the front of the book is a brilliant way for getting ideas for the next meal and I wish more cookbooks had this. Oh, and the paper is slightly waxed so you can wipe spills off it. Very important.
If you had to own 1 western style cookbook, it should be this one.
What you get with this book is a great photo index to pick your dishes and then great breakdowns on recipes, and it's everything, from consomme to curry. It is, I think, unparalled as a place to start the wonderful adventure of cooking. If I had one criticism of it now, it is that some of the recipes or techniques have not dated well. For example, the chicken korma recipe relies heavily on black pepper for flavouring and subsequently tastes rank. But lets not forget that this was published 18 years ago, where to a white middle class housewife, curry meant heat, meant pepper and we now live in a world of Anjum Anand and other fantastic chefs. But I can't give it less than 5 stars as for a place to start and try a myriad of world flavours it's perfect. It's paella recipe (which is good but not great) transformed a scouse mate of mine from someone who would only eat fried burgers and sausages to someone who now equally shares a passion for fine food.
Considering this book is now available through Amazon second-hand and at such a low price, I think it's a steal for any budding cook; possibly somebody leaving home for the first time.
The book was described as "Very good" condition and it is. The dust cover is a little torn and shaded at the edges. The outer hard cover has a copy of the dustcover printed on it and without the dustcover the book looks new.
I expected it to be a Good Housekeeping slim volume. It isn't. It is just a little small than A4 size and it has 449 pages, it is also heavy which explains the postage, (under £3).
I bought this for my daughter but I may keep it for myself.
One good point is a stunning colour index at the beginning of the book with pages of coloured meals with the page number where to find the recipe further in the book. What a good idea.
I cannot believe all this for one penny.
It seems to cover everything and for under £3. Go for it.
Although it is not a recent book, it is so comprehensive and provides a very simple, easy to follow layout for each recipe and, what is sorely lacking on most modern cookbooks, it has a colour picture for every single recipe, This makes all the difference when trying to decide what to make and whether it looks easy enough to attempt as well as confirming that your finished product has turned out how it is supposed to!
Lots of variety with all your basic classic dishes too. I would thoroughly recommend this as a staple to your cookbook repertoire! Very good value for money.
