Do not be put off by the american weights and measures in this fantastic baking book! Just buy a set of cups (1/4 up to 1 cup measures, under £5 at John Lewis), remember that a stick of butter is 4oz/113grams, and you're away! This book not only delivers inspiring and easy to follow recipes but also gives calorie and fat contents for each recipe as well as ideas for varying each recipe to suit all tastes. Grandmother's oatmeal-raisin cookies are particularly delicious as is the marmalade cake. With 600 recipes to choose from this book is essential for any baking fanatic.

I have made a number of the recipes in this book, and so far have had no problems with any of them. You should note that all the measurements and ingredients are in American. So having your own set of american measuring cups could save you time.

There is a helpful chart at the back of the book to give the standard conversions, but most of these could have been found easily, some that are not mentioned are more difficult. Like how many grams are in a "packet" of yeast - I think it worked out around 7.

Ingredients are also their American variants Zucchini bread anyone? Almond Paste? (Courgette bread and Marzipan for those who don't already know).

Despite these failings, I still regularly return to this cookbook, with 600 recipes there is one for everyone, and I always find something new to try from it. The recipes have been amazing, and the explanations are well done and concise. Not every recipe has a picture (which is a little disappointing) but those that it does have look amazing!

Good Housekeeping Baking 23 April 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I looked forward to adding this book to my collection but was disappointed to discover, when I received it, that it is the 1999
book "Good Housekeeping Baking" with a new cover and title but exactly the same inside.
It does say on the title page that it was previously published under the former title but none of this information was in the product details...

Great cookbook 7 Aug 2005
By Samantha - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I received this cookbook for my 14th birthday. The first recipe I tried was the pinwheels. My family and friends loved them. All the recipes I have tried turned out great, but everyone's favorite was the fresh lemon bars.

The recipes are easy to follow and simple to make even for a first time baker like me, and, most importantly, they taste great. The book also has large, colorful pictures of the finished creations. Each recipe gives an approximate amount of calories for the weight watchers.

I would highly recommend this book.
